Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick were officially neutral during the American Civil War, but not-so-subtly supported the Confederates for a variety of reasons - not the least of which was the prospect of having a smaller, weaker USA on their border. They refused to extradite Confederate bank robbers (St. Albans Raid), helped the CSS Tallahassee escape her Unionist pursuers (y halo thar Halifax/Nova Scotia, which both navies used as a supply base), the Chesapeake affair of 1863 (Nova Scotia + New Brunswick), general public opinion, etc. All of this combined to somewhat sour relations between the USA and British North America for a number of years.
Can we see some brotherly hurt and betrayal? During the war, after the war, during/after the Fenian raids, Matthew bitching because the war and threat of an American invasion were part of the reasons he became a Dominion and Nova Scotia won't stop complaining about it and Alfred going "You're an ass"... I can also see Matthew not just being Canada, but the entirety of British North
