- America would never really forget Lafayette's contribution to their War of Independence, which would be epitomized by an event more than a century later. The year was 1917, and France was at the brink of being beaten by Germany during the First World War. When the United States entered the war in support of France, the Germans scoffed at the American intervention, claiming that the Americans would never come. Instead, the America would literally send millions of soldiers over the Atlantic, defying the Germany's attempt to stop them using their U-boats. To quote the historian John Keegan: Germany's "They shall never come" was trumped in six months by America's melodramatic "Lafayette, I am here!" - Even before America officially entered the war, there were American pilots fighting in a company named after Lafayette. America/France, anyone? Anon would prefer familial love, but romantic is ok too
