Gilbert was caught entirely off guard when Ivan struck him fully across the face as he turned at the sound of quick, heavy footsteps. He had been washing the Boss's car, per orders, for the fifth time that day. Every time he finished running over every inch, an invisible flaw would be found and he would be ordered to start anew. At least they hadn't thought of any worse punishment for the day. Since the partitioning, Russia seemed to live only to torture him, for any or no reason at all. As if he himself had been responsible for his Boss's betrayal of their pact
