1784 - The American Revolution is over. But England is being an ass harassing his merchant ships in the Caribbean and Atlantic. China, not as dominated by Europe (yet), is a good market. America arrives in Canton on The Empress of China and finds an elegant and mysterious woman at the port...
America/fem!China. Their relationship at the start and now.
Anons, how come there's so little fem!China?! We talk about Mother Russia, sure, but fem!China is the ultimate cougar! ^_^
Funnily enough, the Chinese from the time of the Old China Trade (beginning in 1784) were more interested in exporting than importing. The Americans loved foreign goods. Even poor Americans had something that was "made in China"...nothing's changed much, huh?
How? By sea, of course! No, no, but you're right that the ship didn't leave from the west coast. The Empress of China left from New York City to land at Canton ((Guangzhou). The round trip took fourteen months and twenty-four days. Long, but very much worth it

This link will give you the great story about how the China-U.S. trade began. I summarize it poorly below, but it's definitely good reading.
