Due to all his trauma and things he's been through, Russia has MPD. One of his personalities is violent and sadistic, while the another is kind and overprotective. The kind!Russia is always trying to protect Liet from whoever is hurting him, without realizing that it is in fact, himself.
Liet loves the kind side of Russia, but fears the harsh personalities, and is never sure which ones will come out at any given moment.

It wasn’t Russia, though, Lithuania told himself. It wasn’t Russia. It was just the accumulation of pain that had been inflicted upon Russia over the years. It was just a defense mechanism from having his lands invaded, raped, and pillaged so many times.
And yet, the humiliation was still white-hot, when Lithuania had to scramble out of the bed, lest he anger the beast more, and he stood on the cold floor, naked and miserable.
The monster was uninterested, thankfully, and commanded, “Leave,” so Lithuania obliged happily.
He was worried though, worried about Russia’s reaction when he saw the handprint bruises that must be around his neck in accumulation to the love bites from the night before. Because Russia would likely get angry at himself for not knowing how to stop it, and then the monster would likely come out to punish Lithuania for upsetting Russia. Thus went the cycle, rinse, wash, repeat.
And the more his happened, the more Russia cracked further, the more violent he became, dependent on his beloved vodka, and the
