This anon is extremely weak against dog stories, because I love my dog to bits and pieces.

The nations through their pets' perspective (a la The Art of Racing in the Rain if you have read that book) from the moment they've been taken in (as either a stray, previously abused, or born and bought) to death (whether it be natural or some outside forces).

Pairings if you desire (bestiality not encouraged).

(I feel like this was requested before, but I can't remember, so forgive me if this request appeared before, anons!)

“Soon or late, every dog's master's memory becomes a graveyard; peopled by wistful little furry ghosts that creep back unbidden, at times, to a semblance of their olden lives.” -Albert Payson TerhuneMy human spends hours at a time sitting next to me on the hard wood of his drawing room floor. He brushes out my fur, and he pets me, and he changes the blankets when I make a mess. (I really don’t mean to make a mess. I don’t want to cause trouble for him, but I can’t...I can’t help it anymore.) It’s gotten harder and harder for me to walk ( ... )

“Just this side of heaven,” he murmurs, and his voice is getting further away. “Is a place called the Rainbow Bridge.” I can tell, somehow, that he’s smiling through his tears. It’s like the...like what Special Friend Alfred always called "pineapple showers". When it rains when it’s sunny. “When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.” He draws a deep breath again, and it’s shaky. He leans down, and I feel him kiss my ear, and his face is already wet. “There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.”

He’s quiet for a long moment. I linger.

“Al,” he says suddenly, and I hear him crystal clear even though it’s barely a whisper. “I’m so sorry...my dear, dear boy. Good boy,” he murmurs. “Will you...say hello to all of my other Als for me? When you get there?”

With my last effort, I wag my tail.

Then, there’s only darkness.

Oh

I'm sobbing like a baby, here.

This is just heartbreakingly beautiful. Oh England. Oh Al. I wanna give you hugs so much.

(fifteen years later, it still hurts.)

Their bodies may be buried in the ground, but their spirits will always be buried in our hearts. It's funny, how something that's not with us for very long at all can stay with us for the rest of our lives.

(As a 'non who's probably about to lose the dog who she grew up like sisters with, it hurts more to watch them suffer than it does to let them go.)

Oh, God. God, God, God. You made me cry and run and hug my puppy. Oh, God. I need to go and find my cat, too and make the both of them take a nap with me and hug them forever.

Great story.

God Only Threw the Humans Out of Paradise [Epilogue] anonymous March 16 2010, 04:00:17 UTC
Arthur laid there next to his beloved dog until that precious body was still and starting to go cold. He stroked the soft, soft white fur, and he made sure that those amber eyes that had always looked up at him as if he was God itself were closed. Scrubbing at his eyes with his sleeve, it did nothing to stop the onslaught of tears. He stood up and then just stood there for a moment, staring down at the body of his old friend.

Twelve short years are nothing in the life of a Nation. It seemed like just yesterday that Arthur had picked up that wriggly little puppy with the gaudy blue polka-dot bow around his neck. And now that same puppy had grown, and lived, and died in what seemed like no time at all. Twelve short, short years were nothing“I’m so sorry, my good boy,” he murmured softly, around the lump in his throat. Finally, he turned and went back inside. As he shut the glass door to the garden, he didn’t look back. If he had the biggest garden in the world, he would have buried each and every one of his Als under that tree ( ... )

All of Arthur's Als are Clumber Spaniels. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clumber_Spaniel) They're the biggest of the spaniels, and were a favorite of Queen Victoria's beloved Prince Albert. They have the second highest frequency of hip dysplasia in any dog breed. They were also almost made extinct during WWI, but King George V was crucial in bringing the breed back.

They drool, and they snore, and they think that they're the size of a Cavalier King Charles. They're very active as puppies, but they become complete couch potatoes when they're older. They're also intensely loving and loyal to their people, even if they can be slightly aloof with strangers.

Basically, they're just about the sweetest English dog ever bred, and they have these big derpy faces that have their own level of cute different from a Cav or a Cocker or any other Spaniel.

this anon has never owned a dog, but has been aunt to quite a few, and this left me bawling.

12 years, or 15, or even the 21 i had with my cat, it's never enough.
lovely and heartwrenching and not too sappy.

Amen, sister.

Authornon lost one of her dogs way, way too suddenly three years ago to illness at the age of 10 (American Cocker). The other is a Dalmatian, 16 going on 17, and, well. We'll say I was drawing on personal experience for Al at the end.

Authornon also has two cats who are probably going on 9 or 10 (one of them actually just recovered from diabetes), and a rabbit who's about six. Animals are really just...Even if they lived as long as we do and longer, it wouldn't be enough.

I actually cried over this story, and fanfiction never makes me cry. I keep going back and reading that last part and I sob all over again. It's easy to cry over a being that loves you purely for existing, isn't it?

Just...great job, author!anon. I hope you de-anon this.

You said it.

(I probably will, as soon as I can look at it without crying to read through again.)

*sniffs* That was a beautifully sad story, and chalk me up as another who teared up over it. Gah, just thinking about that last part has me tearing up all over again.

Thank you so much for writing this, anon. I really loved it.

This anon had her dog die just this summer. She was 17 years old, and she struggled just like Al did, with walking and eating and messes. We had to put her down, she didn't get to die outside, but we were there with her.

The vet's office sent us a letter with that stupid Rainbow Bridge story on it, and her pawprint. I remember at the time how cheesy it was, and I still cry my fricking eyes out whenever I read it.

God, anon. You wrote a story that actually made me cry. Not figuratively, either. It seems like a lot of others really resonated with it as well. Great job.

God, I miss that dog.
