What if America never really gave up on the thought of uniting with Canada? What if the Americanization/close culture between the two has actually been a slow insidious seduction?

Oh, in this Anon's experience, too, that's very true, and even when it comes to border checkpoints, going into Canada is more difficult than going into America, even when you don't have an American passport.

Anon was also looking at colleges, then the countries don't even consider each other to be foreign. McGill's admission process for American students was more similar to for Canadians that foreigners, and the University of Minnesota gives reciprocity tuition to Manitoba residents as if they were a bordering US state.

I hope the other author-anon doesn’t mind this, it just came into my mind when I read the prompt. Just a little drabble fic, nothing special. o:

Sometimes, Canada got this eerie feeling around his brother. Not a, “I’m going to kill you in your sleep” type of feeling or anything that serious, but something. The feeling tingled underneath his skin, and sometimes made him jump whenever they touched.

And America had been trying to touch him more and more recently. It was just simple things, so Canada wasn’t sure whether to be worried, like hand holding (or, dragging, as it was most of the time) or a quick stop to help adjust his hair or glasses or clothing. And Canada couldn’t really complain about that because he did the same to America sometimes (when you looked at your reflection and saw something so off like crooked glasses, it had to be fixed ( ... )

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF That was awesome!

You should never turn your back on a brother with whom you share the world's biggest border and who spent the first couple of decades trying to get you to join his new country. Especially if that brother has atmosphere-reading problems and nukes.

And this is why America makes a scarier Belarus than Belarus.
Good job, anon! ^-^b

Before we begin, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) is the body that regulates a lot of things in Canadian media, including approving new/foreign cable channels and setting quotas for Canadian content on Canadian radio & TV channels. They're one of the organisations behind Canadian cultural protectionism.

"Yeah, a quest, full voices and everything." He snagged his laptop bag from under the coffee table, pulled out his computer. "You start by driving off some toughs who're attacking what you think is an innocent young Imperial girl, but then you get involved with a gang war."

"Like the Guild quest lines?"

"But better. You can actually choose which side to work for, even double-cross them or take them both down."

"The modders sound crazy."

"Crazy awesome."

Matthew leaned in when he launched the program; Alfred smiled.

I saw "insidious" in the prompt and went "dur hur hur," because I have a soft spot for quietly!manipulative!Alfred.

Notes:

Title is from the song of the same name, by Our Lady Peace (Canadian rock band).

One - Setback: Set in 1980. I had a teacher in high school who swore up and down that there were discussions in the US on how to annex Canada for its fresh water if Quebec separated. I have no idea if it's true or not, but it seemed the sort of thing manipulative!Alfred would do. Referendum in question is first of the Quebec sovereignty ones. And yeah, depending on how Quebec separated (what, exactly, an "economic association" with Canada would mean) it could force an economic realignment of Canada. Among other things.

Two - Progress: Set just after the 2010 Olympics. All of the Canadian musicians listed 1) performed either at the Olympics or at the concerts around it, and 2) have attained significant American success (all but The Guess Who have been nominated for Grammys [American music awards]). Canadian actors that are ( ... )

Lovely. Insidious is definately the right word here, here. But Alfred is pretty clearly acting out of love, and the blending of cultures does go both ways, so it doesn't come off as creepy. Great look at what identity really means to them.
