the title is too long to fit, but it's below -- part 1/?

Four times that Arthur Kirkland failed to ask Abigail F. Jones out (and the one time that he succeeded)
IV. Three Weeks Before the Dance
Arthur paces in front of the classroom door, waiting, waiting. She'll be out in a few seconds, and he thanks his lucky stars that he doesn't have a sixth period and that she does, because he's hoping that maybe she'll say yes --
And then Francis has apparently come up behind and slings an arm around his shoulders. Arthur scowls and tries to shake the French boy off, to no avail. "What is this, hmmm? Who is our dear Arthur hoping to ask to prom?"
Arthur doesn't say a word, just finally manages to get the Frog's hands off him, dear God, when the bell rings. He peers inside the classroom, hoping to see Abigail, when the door opens and almost hits him in the face. Abigail walks out, all sunshine and smiles

"Abigail, you don't need to be so loud," she says quietly. Mattie is -- well, she's not always quiet, no, Arthur's seen her at hockey games and he wouldn't dare to call her quiet -- in general levelheaded. She's sensible and despite her physical similarities to Abigail, the two of them are nothing alike.
Abigail's teeth flash in her ever-present grin. "Of course I do, silly! Otherwise you wouldn't hear me! Anyway, Arthur wanted to talk to you."
"Oh, really?" Mattie and Arthur exchange glances, in which Arthur hopes he manages to sufficiently convey the fact that he hadn't actually wanted to talk to her; Mattie's eyes fill with amusement, and Arthur thinks that maybe he has managed to convey it too sufficiently

He marches up to her at lunch; out of the corner of his eye, he sees the quiet sophomore Eirik and thinks that it's odd, because Eirik is the last person to be with Abigail, but that doesn't matter.
Without any regard for who's watching, he says, "Abigail, I've tried time and time again to ask you this, but I haven't been able to muster up the courage. Will you go to prom with me?"
It seems like the entire school's waiting with bated breath for her answer. Arthur feels like he's watching her through a slow-motion camera; her expression changes from amused to surprised to utterly crestfallen -- and suddenly he knows what she's going to say before she says it.
"I'm -- I'm sorry, Arthur, I'm really sorry," and she sounds so sad, so so sad, "but Eirik already asked me and I thought that nobody else would so I said yes, Arthur, I'm sorry!"
He laughs ruefully; of course, of course, he should have known -- he waited too long and now she's gone, of course, in life there aren't any fairy-tale endings. He turns to leave, and people are watching him with anxious eyes, waiting for a scene that he won't give them.
Like the perfect gentleman, he sweeps his bangs out of his eyes and smiles, walks away calmly like nothing's happened.
Inside he's screaming.
0. Prom Day
His green eyes are flat and dull, and though he wears a neatly pressed tuxedo he doesn't really care about what happens to it; after all, there's no reason to look good if Abigail isn't there with him. She and Eirik are sitting together and just like she always does she's laughing, laughing, and it makes him slightly sick to think that she could have been laughing for him, but she's notHe looks away, because he's sure that even just

Eirik looks at him straight-on. "Listen," he says seriously, and the smirk is completely gone. "You better ask her to dance at least once. I didn't ask her for asking her, I asked her because..." His sentence trails off, but he gives himself away by a quick glance to where Angelique and Francis are gliding across the dance floor
