So it’s China, not a European country but this idea hit me and I had to write it. I hope OP likes it.
He never was an ordinary child.
It was not that he was the only of his brothers and sisters to live past infancy that made him strange. No, children died so often then that was hardly unusual.
And it wasn’t that he was the last child born of his mother that made him strange either, even if she seemed awfully young.
Actually, the first few years of his life all seemed normal. He grew well and toddled around like other children, oblivious and happy, mimicking his parent’s expressions, especially his mother’s smiles.
The strange thing was, he never seemed to speak. He was a silent child, and even when he cried the only noise were his gasps of air. His mother worried her child, her only son was defective. It made her weep, but she dared not tell anyone, hiding this fact out of shame

Years went by. He was treated like something holy, given the finest clothes, as much rice as he could want, and even servants to brush his fine dark hair, but none of it made him smile

*w-whimpers* It was beautiful, anon. ;__;<3 Oh little Yao, poor thing. It just makes it more understandable why he holds onto his adopted family so tightly.
I loved it, authoranon! Thank you so much ♥ This works great with China actually as he's one of the oldest nations and must've been lonely for so many years ;_; You managed to make him so lovable as a kid.

Anon, this is wonderful! It's always good to see something written about China's early years, and you've made him so precious and heartbreakingly human. Bravo!
