[Part 8] Anything Goes: USUK, AU based loosely on Chobits (I Can't Stop Loving You)-Placeholder

I've been told that there was an actual Chobits prompt, but I can't find it. If you happen to know where it is, mind sending me a link? Anyway:
Summary of the story thus far: When Arthur was 19 he bought a laptop, shaped as an adorable toddler which he named Alfred. Six years later, Alfred breaks down. Rather than lose his precious little boy, he has Alfred's data and AI transferred into an adult Companion unit. Alfred's new body complicates their relationship with tension Arthur hadn't been prepared for. Their growing misunderstandings and feelings lead to something regrettable.
Scared and confused, Alfred flees after another misunderstanding.

I find myself worrying that Arthur will try and use the data Kiku has stored to replicate Alfred, and that would just break my heart...I kinda hope that Arthur sticks to notepads and such, or even an entirely new laptop, because the idea of just replicating something so personal after a something like this would be so distressing.
I have a few questions since you seem to be taking them! :DDD Are there other Companions (or laptops, I suppose) that are homeless as well? Since Alfred was allowed to run in self-preservation, have others? Or are persocoms typically held onto until they run out or are resold?
Is Alfred in any danger of being 'snatched' and resold after a memory wipe? You mentioned that most people wouldn't attack a Companion because of the strength issue, but what about other situations like when they're shut down? Or if they run out of charge?

This will actually be addressed later on, I promise! I just wrote the scene that does, actually.
I love answering questions. Fire away!
Yes, in fact, there are. I really should have put in foreshadowing earlier, but we will get to meet some of them too. Companions that are well treated rarely run off and most would never be bought if they were resold. Alfred's unit was so new though, it could have probably sold. Laptops are more likely to be run down or be resold, however, the market for old laptops isn't that much better than Companions, considering technology advances so fast.
Companion units aren't usually stolen and resold, but that has been known to happen. Laptops are far more likely since they sell better. If a Companion is taken, it's because it's outnumbered or inactive, so yes, that's a very real threat.
Thank you for the comment! Hopefully I'll be able to get ahead on the next chapter and post it soon.

I am terribly sorry--I've been ill lately and have had a terrible case of writer's block. The next chapter is more than half done though (and I hate its guts). I'll still post it, but it won't be out until (probably) at least next week. Until then, sorry for the long wait. Hopefully I'll be able to write faster after that.

Alfred awoke at 7:15 (as always), lifted his head up to greet the sunlight (as usual), and then near broke down sobbing when he remembered exactly where he was (a new development). He was in a freezing cold alleyway instead of curled up next to Arthur in warm bed sheets; gazing around at the trash and frosted bricks, Alfred realized that he never, ever wanted to do this again. Which, all things considered, was tough luck because he didn’t have anywhere else to go.
Okay, now you just stop it, he ordered himself, squaring his shoulders. You have more important things to worry about.
…like your battery life. Holy shit, what happened? He thought in shock as a warning popped up

Oh, I’m gonna get it now. “Yes,” he managed to squeak out.
The man nodded. “G’t up. We w’nna talk to you.”
“We?” So screwed. Maybe I can make a run for it.He watched with growing unease as the three of other men walked over to them. Only one of them was smiling, and Alfred wasn’t entirely sure that was a good thing. “So! Were you just starting to talk, or did we already miss the fun part, Berwald

Well. That sucked, Alfred decided with a sigh as he began to walk away. Still, his battery was full and he something to go on. With a quirk of his lips, Alfred found a Wi-Fi signal and began a search for the nearest homeless shelter.
It was an hour after dusk before he finally found a homeless shelter that would let him in. The first had told him to turn right back around before they called the police on him. The second had agreed to let him in but refused to let him plug in for the night. The third time was the charm and a busty blonde gave him a watery smile before pointing him to the nearest outlet and then turning to run to go help pass out food.
In the morning, however, the same woman, now paired with a blond man with glasses, stood in front of him. “Um, good morning?”
The man nodded to him. “Good morning. I’m afraid we have a problem.”
Alfred’s unit froze but his processor nearly overloaded. What now? “Um, yes? Did I do something

Wow, thank you for updating! I don't know why you hate this chapter, I think it worked really well! Oh, it's making me so sad to see Alfred like this! Stupid Arthur, stupid.

^This Anon agrees with that Anon up there. That phrase was heartbreaking when Alfred was waiting for Arthur to get home, but here it was devastating. ; _ ;
