He vaguely understood that he succeeded when a force that had seemed to be dragging him down was gone. Swim. With renewed energy and passion, Matthew swam as hard as he could back to the surface. And bumped his head on the ice. He didn’t know if he drifted from the hole or if the hole just froze over. He didn’t have the cognitive abilities to wonder. His lunged burned, deprived of oxygen. He was drenched, all clothes soaked through. The freezing water surrounded him and he was colder than ever before. Even colder than his very birth, when people, from what one day would become Russia, crossed over the Bering Strait and into North America, struggling to live in the new land

“Apologizes comrade, there were no spare clothes and you lost your bag”, Ivan said, looking slightly annoyed at Canada’s behavior. Russia was willing to haul the boy across the Artic, into the station, undress him, set his clothes to dry, and lie in bed with him to warm him up. He wasn’t going to play any homophobic games. Canada didn’t move to lay back down, despite his still-fridge bare body being attacked by the poorly-heated air. Ivan honestly thought that Canada was a more mature than this. Still better than how America would have act, the thought barely served to add patience
