RusCan - Canada is as crazy as Russia

Not snapped!Canada but historically things like Le Grand Dérangement and French-English tensions have left Canada just as crazy as Russia which is what caused the treatment of Aboriginals, internment of the Japanese, etc.

Bonus: Including the internment of Ukrainians and the assassination threats against Queen Elizabeth

“How could you?” Katya says, anger thickening her accent and turning each word into a barbed arrow, a freshly-sharpened sword. “It happened, and the least you can do is admit that you were wrong. It shouldn’t take sixty years to do that!”

“Ukraine, I-” He stops, suddenly aware that for once everyone in the room is watching him, and they’re not happy. “It’s...it’s not that simple.”

She slaps him, actually reaches across the table and slaps him, and for someone who’s normally invisible the shock is overwhelming. He’s left speechless, completely, and just stands there and stares at her until she turns on her heel and leaves, fuming

I first stumbled across, and consequently read, this a few days ago and it has truthfully haunted me since then. I couldn't comment at the time because I had no idea what to say, but after having it bug me for a while I've decided maybe if I tell you exactly what I think it'll stop irritating me.

This. Is. Brilliant. I don't care that it's vague because the vagueness just makes it all the more creepy, and the title is ever so fitting considering the content. The exchange about hearing voices (and in Matt's case, not), though casually delivered, is the part that stuck with me the most.

It's not just the fact it's strangely believable for Canada, it's the fact it's strangely believable in general- in such a short space it reveals so much about the innermost workings of a deranged mind, and the fact that it hasn't quite reached the levels of insanity but it's slowly getting there- and even though Matthew knows that, he's still just slipping into it
