Writer/Writer'sMotherland - Cultural/Historical Theme anonymous December 10 2011, 03:58:50 UTC
My request is as simple as it is open-ended. I would love to see fills regarding about the person filling this prompt, paired or whatever (love, friendship, etc) with one of the country's that they have in their lineage.

Ex: If I was Italian, I would write about me with Italy.

But it's not that simple (else it would be totally boring!) for whomever you writers out their wind up writing with yourselves (Or OC's I suppose, they need some love too), you need to include some form of cultural/historical back-story, fact, or theme to the fill.

Ex 2: With Italy, I might include the culture/history kink of him being a great country for agriculture or that it's predominantly of the Roman Catholic religion.

I feel that this prompt might be a nice excuse to learn a little more about your mother/fatherland that you come from (using the loveliness of hetalia of course!), and it's just been floating around my head for a while ;P

Ooh, anon, we must be on the same wavelength, because I've actually been writing something similar to this! Give me a couple of days to play with it a little bit more, and I'll have something for you!

“We have this argument every Sunday,” Romano grumbled, toothbrush hanging out of his mouth. A drop of foamy, spearmint drool threatened to make a break for it down his chin. “I'm not having this argument with you. Not this week.” He crossed the hall to the bathroom and I heard him spit angrily into the sink.

“That's funny,” I called, “because I think we're having it.” I rolled onto my side and cocooned myself in the sheets...which were promptly ripped halfway off the bed. “Hey!” It was freezing; Romano had this bizarre habit where he left the window in our bedroom cracked, inclement weather be damned, for fresh air.

“Get up!” he smiled at me, eyes glinting. “I told you, we're going, and that's final.”

I refused to sit up, refused to give him even an inch. Pulling the covers back over myself, I watched him paw through the closet - a walk-in, which I'd thought was excessive during our apartment hunt; now I knew better. Exhausted as I was, it took me a few moments to realize he wasn't rummaging through his clothes, but through ( ... )

His status as a country - or, half of one - had always befuddled me. There were times where just as I thought I'd managed a grasp on the concept, something would happen to wrench me from that complacency and remind me how impossible such an understanding was. As a mortal individual of free will, two facets about his condition eternally baffled me: his life span, and more importantly, the divergence in his consciousness. There was a kind of split between Romano the person and Romano the collective conscious of Southern Italy ( ... )

My lordy; this was an amazing little fill here <3 I loved the detail of the cultural differences you had with Romano, and it was written very well with the both of you. The religious aspect, or lack there of, depending on how one looks at it, was very well played indeed. It gave a nice look on how countries devote themselves to a belief, even if their people do so another way.

Oh, and that ending was just plain adorable, anon <3

I'm so glad you liked it! I was very nervous because I was afraid I'd somehow diverged from the prompt. Thank you for your lovely complements, OP!

So I am the first anon, finally finished messing with this. To the Southern Italian anon: I actually really liked your take on the prompt! It's pretty different from mine, but that's kind of part of the beauty of this prompt, I think. :) She is America’s, really, and she always has been; she can’t imagine being anything else or wanting to be anything else, but there is still a part of her (some deep, old part) that belongs wholly to Greece, and he is grateful for it. She loves him, she really does; he can see it in her eyes (blue, blue like the sea) and in the way she smiles as he runs his fingers across her skin: over her breasts and the curve of her belly and, finally, dipping between her legs. She sighs, then, soft and breathy and tugs him down to touch their lips together. After, they lie entwined on Greece’s bed, and Greece watches the fading sunlight catch in her hair. She will go back to America soon and fall into the warmth of his cities and his rolling golden hills, but for now, Greece cradles her as surely as he ( ... )

As they work on preparing the dough for the kourambiethes, she tells him those fables of his as she learned them growing up: slow and steady wins the race and honesty is the best policy. They’ve changed with time, and now there’s something distinctly American about them, but he enjoys them all the same. Then as she adds the almonds and he the Metaxa, she shares stories he’s never heard, local legends in New Jersey about a Lady in White who haunts the tree she died beneath (“My parents used to scare me to death every time we drove through that park,” she whispers, grinning) and about a horned monster with the head of a horse and wings like a bat that roams the state. Greece likes stories, even ones that are not his own, and he watches her glow as she speaks and thinks that he will miss her when she’s gone ( ... )

ohhhhhhh myyyyyyy God.

This fill is so good! I really, really enjoyed the multitude of unspoken details and understandings between you and Greece, and I enjoyed the recurring mention of America -- it made my heart ache a little. But I found Greece to be perfectly written, not reacting in any way jealous or upset that 'she' is America's. I loved his love of stories, no matter their origin; I loved their shared fondness for cats; I loveloveloved the fact that some of the stories she told had an American twist. Oh, anon, you've won me over and probably the OP as well!

Also, this anon used to be a Jersey!Anon and was thrilled to see the Jersey Devil, haha.

Oh gosh, you're really making me smile here, thank you so much! I liked yours a lot, too, especially with the whole Catholic thing--I'm Catholic, or at least, I was confirmed Catholic, but there are things about it that make me uncomfortable, so really resonates. I like how ultimately you came together in the end. Also, I like rosaries; some of them are really pretty.

And yeah, I totally love the Jersey Devil. It's practically my duty as a New Jerseyan to bring up the Jersey Devil whenever possible. <3
