What intrigued Kiku the most, however, was this man's face. Its features were sharper and more defined than Kiku's own mass of constantly shifting features and yet curiously soft and relaxed at the same time, giving no hint of the terror that should have accompanied the realization that he was dying or being carried by a tentacled beast from the deep.

All of a sudden, the man's face contorted and he let out a series of loud coughs, regurgitating a stream of water from his throat. Kiku jerked back as if startled awake from a dream as the man's coughing gradually ceased and he half-sat up, his eyes fluttering open, and it occurred to him only then that this was no time to be lost in dreams ( ... )

Does Kiku look like a Beholder?

He can look like one in your mind's eye if that's what you want to imagine him as, although I personally envision him as having a lot more eyes and tentacles than the typical Beholder. The title's really more of a reference to the famous phrase "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" which should become clearer later on.

Oh my goodness, this is just great so far. Hercules being unscathed by the whole thing was oddly fitting, somehow. I'm looking forward to seeing what exactly is up with him.
And it's all so realistic, despite it being from a tentacle..man's point of view.
