FEM!USUK, a librarian and her assistant anonymous July 17 2012, 23:57:36 UTC
Fem!US, Fem!UK, England is a librarian in her job away from being a country, so isn't she surprised that when she finds that America, having recently moved to England for ?Reasons, America decides that she wants to get a job as a librarian assistant, without knowing that England already worked there.

Must end up as US/UK (or UK/US, it really doesn't matter to me, so long as neither are super out of character, seriously), but under no circumstances do I want smut. ^^;

---

Bonus 1: I really, really want America to read majorly difficult/scientific/historically accurate books, and be seriously embarrassed when she finds out that England knows she reads those types of books.

Bonus 2: Something, anything about England lecturing America for often-times showing up in a hoddie and jeans and converse. She then proceeds to take America shopping for serious librarian attire.

You say you don't want it out of character, and then have that as your first bonus? Is it a comedic thing?

........because outgoing atheletic/cheerleaders type can't read difficult books?

In any case, OP said 'not super OOC', not 'completely IC'. I'd say that gives ample elbow room even if your definition of IC interps differs.

No, because America isn't the type to, regardless of genderflip.

Why not? America is known for inventing things, and has quite an interest in science. Let me guess, you've only seen the Funimation dub.

Uh, America actually had the best scientific programs in the world. We haven't been as good as a few other contries lately, but we've definitely been a power for science before. Besides, it actually is in character, since Himaruma has actually said, point blank, that America chooses to be oblivious, so wouldn't it fit that s/he would actually be smart enough to choose whether or not they want to know things?

But either way, seeing the argument, you guys both make good points, but, and I hate to go this route, isn't it sort of about interpretation anyways? The OP just suggests, but it isn't right to completely demolish someone's idea, regardless...

Anyways, can we end the argument quickly so this doesn't get reported?

Hate to butt in here, but I will say it's perfectly possible to be very intelligent at some things and hopeless at others, so even if socially America actually is as much of a ditz as he sometimes seems that doesn't mean he can't be very good at science.

Well, yeah, I never said that I didn't think he'd be good at science. I actually wanted him to be smarter than people thought, at least at one or two subjects (hence the science or history books?)...

I mainly was trying to diffuse the argument since I don't want to scare off potential fillers... Sorry if it was offensive, though.

Oh, I wasn't trying to start an argument, OP; people just get quite defensive over these things. In as much reply to you as to the anon above, in all the Hetalia canon material, I've never seen America inventing anything that isn't a bit silly for the sake of comic relief, or displaying an interest in science past the general interest of a consumer. And canon states that America is oblivious to atmospheres; he chooses not to process people's emotions, not information.

I can concede that America itself has been a force for science, but so have other countries, not just the US. Countries don't always reflect with Hetalia representations as they're based on stereotypes -- for instance, I doubt Greece has some kind of record for 'most languid people', but Hetalia!Greece constantly appears sleepy.

Is it too obvious to point out Hetalia is mostly for jokes? With only very occasional serious stories?

People do use nation information to inform their depiction of nation-tans. I introduced Greece in my own story as an oil shipper because Greek shipping magnates were very influential. Sleepiness is a personality trait.

da

i think that was their point

and an author adding new information to a character =/= in character

I have to disagree on the author adding new info to a character making that character OOC. It doesn't. Characterization is implied through so many things, mannerisms, speech, and interactions, just to name a few, and sometimes adding new info to a character is essential to a fic. Provided the character continues to behave as that character, as expressed through various means, that character is IC, as far as I'm concerned. The whole fun of fanfiction comes in putting familiar characters in new situations and their reactions to it. A small character trait does not derail characterization by any means.

completely changing a character's intelligence, just because they want the country it's attached to to look good, is not 'a small character trait'

But the person who created Hetalia says America IS intelligent. That America is just lazy or uninterested or prejudiced or playing pranks when he acts stupid. More recent strips have America playing dumb then giggling while everyone has tantrums all around him.

Fans who insist that the Hetalia creator is wrong, that only *their* interpretation is correct are acting entitled.

Also, in the real world, many people have selective intelligence. They know things that are important or interesting to them. They can often act like morons on everything else.

Okay, I keep hearing that America being intelligent is canon, so where is that? The only thing in canon people keep referencing is that though he seems oblivious to atmospheres, he can choose to read them if he likes. That doesn't mean he can be smart when he wants to, it means he only pays attentions to people's emotions when he feels like it. Those recent strips you're talking about don't display sudden intelligence, they display that he knows he's being annoying and finds it funny. Little kids find it funny when they act annoying. That's the kind of mindset America in canon displays ( ... )

Ah? This argument's being made again? ... Maaaan... Well, perhaps I can sort things out.

I made this prompt because I wanted to see this. Does it mean anyone else has to like it? No. If everyone really hated it so much, they could have ignored it, never leaving a comment, ever. And that would have been fine. Kinda suckish for me ('cause I totally wish someone else would have liked this, too), but all in all, fine. But this? People commenting about how a fill on the KINK MEME (y'know, a place for anything from angst to crack, with random prompts as far as the eye can see?), about how it wouldn't make sense in CANON... doesn't really seem to make much sense. And I don't want to sound rude (I really don't!), but I really don't see where people think it's their place to 'correct me' on my views.

But about your point specifically:

America is also blonde. What does that have to do with it ( ... )
