A BRIEF HISTORY LESSON, IF YOU WILL! Where Little Buddha (the story before this) takes place in 1950, when China began campaigns and absorption of Tibet as an “autonomous” municipality, this story takes place some time between 1959 (when the Tibetan Resistance movement began) and 1969 (when Nepal withdrew military aid from the Tibetan resistance). No, I swear, I didn’t do, like, twenty-billion hours of research just to find a spot in history for this fic it was only, like, two. Also, because China doesn’t think of Tibet as a country-and because, in my head, having an actual name is synonymous with being a real person and thus a real country-China won’t be calling Tibet by the human name I gave him (like at the end of Little Buddha). The knife comes point down onto his hip, and begins to slide that way down the leg of his trousers. He can feel the blood welling up, can feel Yao watching him, but he won’t scream. He won’t do it.

“I’ve given you protection from the Huns and the Mongols and the Russians.”

“Only when you weren’t too busy licking your own wounds,” Pemba whispers, shaking. Yao cups him between his thighs, and he struggles, sneering at Yao a bit. “What happened to the man you were? The one with the Emperor and the scholar-soldiers and the honor.”

Yao shuts his eyes, frowning deeply. “Be quiet.”

“What happened to the man that spread his knowledge to all of Asia?”

“I said be quiet,” Yao growls, more forcefully.
