This is the first time that Russia has ever been allowed to see China draw that long, glimmering, Yellow River ribbon from his braid, and he catches his breath at the tumble of black hair. It's impossible to believe that so much is contained inth at smooth, simple braid the other man wears daily - it's impossible to describe how erotic it is, that loose waterfall of dark against China's skin. In the lamplight, "...and of course we shall find a way to get electricity to everyone, sooner or later," China is saying, "never again shall our poets and scholars, having to rely on stolen bits of candlelight after they're done driving home the cows. Then it will not only be the priviledged who have the liberty of recognizing their characters. Everyone will have ample opportunities," Russia can't help but think that it's a pity, with the new age that he and China are preparing to usher in, that there will no longer be room for candles and the glow that brings out the hints of gold along the curves of China's throat, and his back and his ( ... )

Ach, this is so gorgeous--the tenderness, China's rejection of 'traditional culture,' Russia's welling doubts, the wonderful allusions to how industrialization progressed in each country under communism (and industrialization has never been so hot!)--all in all, a brilliant piece.

=DDD I'm glad you liked it! I'm glad you liked all the industrialization allusions too - I tried not to make them too heavy-handed (and I should've read this over before posting, there're several mistakes that make me cringe)

O-oh wow. When written like this, they seem like my favourite pairing. This mixture of cautiousness and optimism! And of country and human! Ah, Russia's nostalgia for the decadent bourgeoisie lifestyle that he will never quite be able to shame himself out of! And his impatience with China's changes! And China talking of electricity while still thinking in terms of poets, scholars and heaven's gates! And the differences in their styles of love-making! And Russia's impatience with others' low pain tolerance! And - blood and sunrise ;v; It's all so perfect for them~ ;v; The delicious cultural and historical references are like raisins in this cake of sensuality and spot-on characterisation. (Okay, I'll go join Russia in the "pathetic" camp now.)

Ah, one thing - not sure if Russia's that likely to think China inscrutable. Being half-Asian himself, he has less Orientalistic tendencies than his fully European neighbours. (He has a much longer history of writing Asians off as cruel yet simple barbarians.)

I'm a sucker for anything Chinese and Canadian (guess what I am!) - and I'd read Malaysian/Singaporean fic too, if any bloody well existed. XD.

That said, Russia/China is simply delicious~ I love getting to throw in historical references and I'm afraid that I might be a bit heavy-handed with them as well. This would be really early on in their relationship, obviously. When they both believe everything will genuinely turn out alright (which, I guess, it sorta did and sorta didn't) and before they both go kind of guano.

And thanks for the concrit - I don't know very much about the Russian mindset and I'll definitely keep that in mind while I go hunting for more Russia/China to write...

Ah, patriotism at its purest! I guess it's hard not to be. ^^ By the way, if there was any China/Canada, I'd so read it, if only for the pretty.

If this is heavy, well, please don't stop being heavy-handed. This fandom is far too light on the references.
And this is my favourite stage in the relationship, or rather the only one I can bear to read about, so I'm very glad you chose it.

You're welcome! If there's ever anything you need to know regarding the Russian mindset for your future Russia fics, you could try asking me, I might know.

My god anon. This was just amazing. I agree with the other reviewers, the references were just stunning. Probably my favourite treatment of my favourite Hetalia pairing - I definitely hope you take up some of the other prompts in the meme!

Tried to make it seem realistic but made it the exact opposite instead. xD; Enjoy!
