England sighed, trying to keep the helpless smile off his face in deference to a more parental frown. “Alfred. What was our deal?”
His little colony looked up at him from the doorstep with those wide blue eyes rimmed nearly perfectly with red-brown mud. He pouted mud-colored lips so they extended from a muddy face and twisted his little muddy fingers in his mud-splattered clothing.
“That I could play in the mud if I took a bath and didn’t give you trouble after,” little America rambled off through pursed lips.
“I do believe you’re going against our deal, Alfred.” England knelt down and gave the little colony his best stern face.
“But I don’t like baths!”
“But you must be clean.”
“But I don’t like being clean!” America whined. “Why do I gotta be clean?”
“You must be clean,” Arthur corrected, “because I said so. Come now.” He waved, motioning for America to drop his clothes. “Take them off out there, or you’ll get the whole house muddy

The little boy’s eyes went wide when he saw it. The model ship was almost as big as his head and floated in the clear water of the metal bathtub as if spanning a tiny ocean. America’s eyes were wider than England had ever seen them as he leaned over the edge of the tub to peer at it

Alfred’s face registered severe shock. “No way! How come you won?” He lifted the big boat out of the water with both hands and stared at it ruefully. “I had the biggest ship!”
“What did I tell you, Alfred?” Arthur grinned, pushing the smaller boat in front of him towards the colony with the tip of his finger. “Bigger isn’t always better. Sometimes it’s the little ones who can be quick enough to seize victory!”
“But you’re bigger than me and you always win,” pouted America. His wet, recently washed hair dripped into his face and made his eyelashes flutter.
England laughed and leaned forward to kiss his little charge on the forehead. “I’m England, Alfred. That’s just how the world works
