Of course, this is set during Japan's occupation of Hong Kong in 1941, which lasted for three years and eight months. At the same time, Japan also ruled Taiwan (this lasted from 1895 to 1945). Title is totally a not-so-subtle reference to "Intoxicated Under the Shadow of Flowers" by Li Qingzhao.They haven't known each other long; not even more than two weeks, really, but Hong Kong can't help the way his heart palpitates every time Taiwan looks at him, smiles at him, touches his hand

They continue, Hong Kong bringing a hand up to run his fingers through Taiwan’s lush locks of hair, and it isn’t long before he licks at her lips, silently asking for entrance.
She lets him in, and tries to press their bodies even closer together, almost clumsily rubbing her tongue back against Hong Kong’s.
Taiwan gasps a little when Hong Kong’s hand comes to rest on her left breast, his thumb moving slowly over it through the thick silk of her white qipao, and he kisses her harder
