Request: I'd like to see something about Eurovision, please! ;'D
Author: Llama

“’Congratulations, I have arrived’? I have to say, that’s an interesting choice of lyrics.”
“And ‘We are the winners of Eurovision’ isn’t?”
“Well…”
“I wonder which one of us will do better in the contest.”
“It will be interesting to see.”
“You sound like you think you know.”
“W-Well, with all due respect…”
“Loser buys the winner coffee at their place.”
“…Fine. I accept.”

It was the summer of 2006 and, in a small coffee shop in Iceland, it was time for an agreement between two gentlemen to be resolved. Fortunately for Iceland, the other party happened to be in the area sooner than expected and the whole thing could be gotten over with quickly and forgotten about soon enough.
“So it looks like you underestimated me after all.” Lithuania smiled sheepishly as Iceland forked over the cost of two cups of coffee to the waitress. “I did warn you.”
“You did.” Iceland was certainly not smiling at all. “But I don’t think I underestimated you. I think I overestimated everybody else.”
Lithuania laughed quietly. “Now, now…”
Iceland made no reply.
Lithuania’s smile faded as a thought occurred to him. “You’re… You’re not actually upset about this, are you?” It was true that Iceland had been the only Nordic whose entry didn’t reach the finals and now that Finland had won the whole contest, he was also the only one who hadn’t won it yet. Maybe Iceland was harboring a little bit of resentment over it. Maybe Lithuania was dancing around a touchy subject.
But Iceland merely shrugged. “Not really. I just thought that more people would get that it was a joke.”
Lithuania sighed only partially from relief. At least Iceland wasn’t really upset. While it was true that a lot of nations hadn’t realized that Iceland’s entry in the contest had been a farce, that wasn’t necessarily the reason that he had lost their bet. It was a little… over the top. Funny, but over the top.
“She did throw around some rather, well, interesting comments before her performance,” Lithuania said. “She might have crossed a line or two.”
Iceland’s eyes narrowed. “She’s a fictional character. Why would anyone take anything she said seriously?”
“I don’t know.” Lithuania restrained a nervous laugh. “For the record, I enjoyed her performance well enough.”
Iceland allowed his mouth to form a small smile. “I have to admit yours was good too. Catchy.”
“Why, thank you.” Lithuania chuckled. He could not return the compliment exactly, but added, “Yours was catchy too.”
After a brief silence, Iceland spoke again. “I didn’t think you’d be the type, though. To send in an entry like that.”
Lithuania couldn’t help but laugh. “Well, the popular vote decides that kind of thing, doesn’t it? I didn’t really have much influence over it. You don’t seem to be ‘the type’ either, though.”
Iceland let out a chuckle of his own. “I guess I don’t.”
The Baltic nation extended his hand across the table. After a moment of confusion, the Nordic reached out and shook it.
They had bet against each other, but in that moment, they were just the two nations who had trolled Eurovision that year.
