What is it that turns people into asses when they board a public bus? Why do folks insist on playing their cdplayer/iPod/mp3player/radio up to 11? To be ignorant? Rude?

This morning, I was sitting near the back of an articulated bus, and a guy gets on and sits at the very back. His iPod was on a stupidly high volume, so high I could hear it ( Read more... )

You can really enjoy music more at a tolerable level than an ear shattering level. Once your hearing gets bad enough to need that you miss out on all the artistic nuances of music that even the most intense music has.

I put the blame on the "earbud" type of headphones. It lets in lots of noise, and so most people respond by turning the volume up. It makes these headphones, if you don't turn them up, safe for joggers to use... you can hear the traffic. But, for bus travel... people should use the "earmuff" type of headphones, you don't have to turn it up because most of the outside noise is eliminated. Ah well... heh, the guy gets on now much later in the route, so we only have his noise for a few stops. Makes it easier to tolerate. And... he turns it down now. :P Cause he knows someone will stand up to him, I think.

Yeah, it was hard to resist the urge to smack the person. But, just as his right to listen to his music at 11 stops at my ears, my right to throw a punch stops at his face. :P But... it was really tempting, I'll bet he would have been surprised... And normally I'm not aggressive or angry, but he really pushed my buttons.

You played your music loud? Or you asked someone to turn it down? Hee, either way, it shouldn't be like that. I mean, if someone is playing too loud, I won't go and shove them around. And I doubt most folks would be willing to shove someone else around who was asking them politely. Hee...

Weird, people look at me funny when I turn my volume down... I make it just loud enough for me to hear over the engine.... One of these days I'm going to beat the crap out of someone using earbuds that I can hear clearly halfway across the bus though...

I'm trying hard not to do that. :P

Indeed... Tis one thing to hear oh so softly a beat or mayyyybe lyrics, but if you can hear the whole damn song clearly fifteen feet away, it's too loud... Then again, the earbud ones are somewhat inefficient...
