You did just move in with your girlfriend. That's a big life change, not to mention a big change in your daily sleeping arrangements. That'll mess things up. Add to that there's a lot of political/social/literal upheaval in the world right now. It stands to reason that's affecting you. We're in the midst of a change, methinks. REM is important. If you don't dream, you'll go crazy. (look it up, I read studies in university).
I'm not someone that dreams usually, either. I dream maybe once every couple of months. It's not usually panicking like yours was, but they are still pretty intense.
I don't think it's the REM cycle though, I think it's the Stage 4 sleep cycle. Have you been going to sleep sober? I might suggest ONE drink an hour before bed and see if that helps. Doesn't need to become habitual, sometimes one night is enough to hit the reset button.
Conversely, if you have *not* been sober before going to sleep, then try that too. ;)
Last but certainly not least, I would recommend exercise. Exercise days always knock me out like a ton of bricks. Go for a walk in your pretty new neighbourhood! ;) Or hire me as your trainer! :D
