addenenda from Word of God Personality: When we first meet Junpei, he is the normal college student who winds up in the midst of a potentially deadly game, and that somewhat sums up his role in the game. He is connected to the events of the story simply due to his childhood closeness with June, and it's that distance and freshness that allows him to piece together the events of the past and present. On the enneagram scale, Junpei is the Challenger*--the one willing to forge ahead and take the lead. He strives to ensure that everyone gets out okay, using his strength and mental fortitude to fulfill his role as the game's protagonist and save the day. As the enneagram predicts, he is also willing to confront those whom he doubts, like Ace (in Safe) and Santa. On a superficial level, this is indeed Junpei; however, he (like his castmates) grows out of the narrow definition of the enneagram over the course of the game.
In the game, Junpei is both a manipulator and the manipulated. While he's unafraid to turn the tables in his favor via simple parlor tricks or a well-timed ploy, in the end, he plays into the hands of Zero. His love for June is quite possibly his greatest weakness, and it is used against him to force the conclusion of the game. He trusts her beyond what he should, even after the revelation of her true nature. But that doesn't mean that he isn't smart or clever; he's both, and it shows through his ability to solve the puzzles laid out in the rooms along with the help of the others.
Without a doubt, he is one of the most cheerful and silly characters in the cast, cracking jokes despite the severity of the cast's situation. His jokes are usually bad puns or simply ridiculous, but they keep his spirits up as well as those of the others'. But that doesn't mean that he doesn't take things seriously. He understands the gravity of their situation all too well, and that's why he's so determined to save June and the rest. He also manages to befriend a majority of the other hostages, with his good nature, usefulness, and (in the case of Clover) help from Zero. They come to trust him with their lives (to some extent) and with important information, which gives him the ability to move forward and unravel the puzzle.
Very much a "good guy," Junpei offers help where it's needed, doing his best to ensure that everyone gets out alive. He strongly rejects any plans that save some while sacrificing others, although his main concern (always) is June, Akane Kurashiki, Kanny--his childhood friend and secret crush. But when it comes down to it, it didn't matter that the Nonary Game was set up to save Akane's life specifically. According to word of God--and shown through his actions towards Clover and the other characters--Junpei is the kind of guy who could never let a 12-year-old girl die. Even if, in alternate futures, she causes his death and misery, he would still save her.
That's just what he does.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
strengths;
♣ Junpei's smart. He might not be as good with random knowledge as, say, Snake or June, but he's bright enough to work his way through a number of complex puzzles. He also is able to deduce the identity of the crazy, homicidal killer (is that redundant?) in at least one path, as well as the correct identity of Zero.
♣ He can also be manipulative, when he wants to be; he sets up a gambit so that he can pick what door he wants to go into during the final door choice, and during the Safe ending, he tricks Ace into revealing his true intentions as an evil maniac by claiming to be Santa and forcing him to admit his prospagnosia.
♣ Junpei is very loyal and dedicated. He strives to save June no matter what.
♣ Junpei lives in an apartment on his own while attending college, so he most likely is capable of taking care of himself.
♣ Junpei can access the morphogenetic field in a big way, acting as first a receiver and then a transmitter for 12-year-old Akane. These abilities allow him to save her as well as himself and the others.
♣ ...Unlike pretty much everyone else (bar perhaps Lotus), Junpei has no traumatic past or anything to speak of. He's a perfectly happy and normal 21-year-old college student; the second Nonary Game is really the only trauma he's faced. And he'll likely be genre savvy here.
weaknesses;
✖ When it comes to June ("Kanny"), Junpei seriously has blinders on. She's his main concern for a majority of the game, and he's in love with her to the point of losing sight of reality. When he believes Zero to be Santa, he blames him for the three murders he's caused; when it turns out that Zero is June, he suddenly forgives her all of that. Sure, she was trying not to die, but he deludes himself enough not to put any blame on her. Plus, according to Word of God, he spends the rest of his life chasing her.
✖ In connection to above: it's very easy to use his desperation to save June against him. He also is often distracted by worrying about her well-being.
✖ Sometimes, Junpei isn't as serious as the situaiton would require. He's constantly cracking jokes and puns despite being potentially about to die. In one case, during a fire, he is even slightly more concerned with the fate of a mannequin he christened "Science Boy" than with Clover's until Lotus verbally smacks some sense into him.
✖ Junpei can be....kind of an ass, sometimes. Oftentimes, this is towards Lotus; in multiple paths, he jokes about the Mercury symbol really being the "Lotus symbol," since it's "the woman symbol with horns." He can also tease her about being old....but that doesn't end well for him.
✖ Junpei has no game with the women. At all. He dances around June for a majority of the game, unsure how to handle his affection and the million and one "innocent" innuendos she throws his way.
✖ Physically, Junpei isn't much of a threat. He could probably be taken out by all of the other men/boys in 999, and perhaps even by some of the women. His physical strength only comes out when he's in determinator mode.

First Person Sample:
...Hello? [ Hey there, Johto, have a college kid who looks a little like he hasn't showered in a while. And is....currently wearing an expression that can be best described as amazement. ]
I must be dreaming. I mean, Pokémon? [ Gestures broadly around. ] I remember playing this when I was a kid....
[ Junpei zones out for a bit, assumedly lost in his childhood. From behind him, a Teddiursa comes and tugs on his pantsleg, catching his attention. ]
Oh, hey! It's a...teddy bear Pokémon! [ He picks up the little gal. ] Funny. I don't remember this type... Hmm. I guess I'll call you June!
[ ...And then the Teddiursa bites him. ]
OUCHGODDAMNIT! What the hell.... [ Junpei quickly drops the bear-like critter, much to its displeasure. ] What, you don't like that? I always liked the name June.
...But you're right. It doesn't fit you very well. [ He turns back to the camera, as if remembering that he has a (hallucinated?) audience. There's a weird little smirk on his face. ] Hey, guys? What do you think of the name 'Clover' for her?
Third Person Sample: The first thing he thought when he woke up in Johto, in a bed he didn't recognize, was something along the lines of oh god, not again.
He'd just finished rescuing himself from the last kidnapping (come to think of it--where were the others from the van?), and here he was, waking up in another unfamiliar room. Except this time, he didn't smash his head, while getting up, the window didn't break and fill the room with water, and there was no strange bracelet on his wrist. So, he supposed he was off to a better start so far.
Still, this wasn’t his apartment in Japan-or the van back in Arizona. How had he gotten here? The last thing he could remember was driving off with the others to catch up with Santa and Ju-Kanny. Where was she?
Surely she was waiting for him, along with the others. Junpei just had to find a way to get to them, which left him only one option:
[ Seek a way out! ]
…Which, in terms of leaving the room, was quite simpler than he expected it to be. Junpei had been conditioned to expect locked doors requiring the careful use of digital roots and hidden keys, forgetting that, in the normal world, doors just opened when you wanted them to.
Bursting free of the room (with entirely too much energy, seeing as how there was none of that expected resistance), he nearly bowled over a middle-aged, matronly-looking woman who’d been approaching his door.
“Oh, good! You’re awake! You’d better set off before you’re too late,” she told him, and he couldn’t help but feel way too lost. Who was this woman who was now currently shoving a pack into his hands and ushering him out the door? Junpei was ready to turn back and demand some answers when he caught sight of something.
In his pack, underneath the lunch but on top of the spare clothes, was a pokéball.
The tinny greeting of the Pokédex almost went over his head as he stood confused outside of the house, trying to figure out just how he walked into a video game from a few decades ago.
*Yes, I did fuck this up on the original application; I thought enneagram numbers corresponded with bracelet numbers, for some reason. Turns out he's 8, a very auspicious number...
