I tried to post to LJ yesterday, but I couldn't even bring the page up for some reason... no matter.

Meghan Cassandra Howell arrived at 5:16pm on Tuesday, May 12, 2009
7 lb 6 oz, 21 inches long

Like most newborns, she looks a lot like a miniature Winston Churchill.

We checked into the hospital at 11:00, Monday night, and she was given medication to induce labor at midnight. Unfortunately, as is common with when labor is induced, she experienced back labor.

By noon, she'd had enough and the anesthesiologist was contacted for an epidural. This helped for a while, then wore off about three. The OB/GYN showed up at 4:30 and announced that she was still only 3cm, and that an emergency cesarean was the best option for Leighann and the baby. They ended up putting her under general anesthesia, and I was unable to be in the operating room for the delivery.

Both of them are doing fine now. We had originally thought that Leighann would be going home today, but she was a bit more sore this morning than she had been yesterday, and after some discussion with the doctor, it was decided that she would spend another night in a bed that can raise with a button.

Leighann was a bit worried that she would have trouble bonding with Meghan because of some of the medication that she is on, but that seems to have disappeared after the first time that the baby stopped crying immediately when she picked her up and held her to her shoulder. As she put it, "I didn't think that the baby would like me."

The baby seems to like her just fine.
