my trouble with debates

i kinda hope this is a one time thing becuase i find that arguing with friends is very counter-productive... i'm far more likely to jump up if i don't know you at all and say, "wait a second, that is not right because ..."

what i've never liked about the spirit of debate is that its not a forum to exchange ideas but instead a place for people to argue at each other... no one benefits, because no one listen to what the other people are saying.

if you ever noticed that is why when people are debating i tend to go quiet because i'm sitting back and REALLY trying to understand where the other person is coming from... even if i don't agree, maybe i can learn something. I find few people have open minds...
