setting 1, not sure about relationship psychette10 August 13 2011, 23:51:07 UTC
The police thought they had it all figured out. Clear cut case of suicide, a jumper now splattered all over the pavement. They weren't even concerned about the rain falling steadily, cleaning up the crime scene before they were done processing it, all they were concerned with was getting the building's entrance back to normal so they could reopen the bar. The owner was starting to complain that it was bad for business ( ... )

...mysterious stranger? idek justabitoffun August 14 2011, 02:29:09 UTC
He was there in the crowd, a shadowy figure amongst the gawkers. It was his calm, coolness that set him apart, the keenness with which he eyed the scene and took in the details with an intelligence lacking in the rest of the idle on-lookers. He glanced towards her more than once, discreetly, watching carefully, and it was during one of these times that his bright green eyes glinted strangely in the lamplight as if the entire situation were something straight out of a mystery novel.

She wasn't the only one aware of the irony of the situation. Someone else was paying closer attention, too. Did he, perhaps, have any answers for the mystery before them.

don't get more mysterious than Loki psychette10 August 14 2011, 02:35:39 UTC
There was a prickling on her neck creeping up slowly, the sensation of being watched...

Jackie turns her head, looking around at the crowd, trying to tell herself it was just her imagination. The dreariness of the situation, the rain, the dead body, surely it was affecting her judgement.

And then she saw him looking her direction, a few seconds longer than a normal onlooker to a crime scene. He had looked away for the moment and she does the same, holding her coat tighter around her and sneaking a look out of the corner of her eye. Why was he looking at her? She hadn't done anything.

The dark stranger wisped easily through the crowd until it was obvious he wasn't just angling for a better view of the crime scene from outside the taped-off perimeter. He was headed towards her.

Then he disappeared entirely from view as he twisted by one bulky man.

He didn't reappear in the crowd. Suddenly, he was behind her, leaning forward slightly to whisper into her ear. "You see it too, don't you?"

Perhaps she had stared back for too long, now he was heading towards her. Who was he? What did he want with her? She followed him with her eyes till he disappeared into the crowd. Odd, she thinks to herself, turning back to the scene where the police are stuffing the body into a large black bag, another blue uniform telling the owner of the bar that they will be gone in no time...

...and his voice in her ear sends cold shivers running down her spine, her grip tightening on her umbrella handle. She couldn't tell if he was armed, but sneaking up on her like this, it was likely. There was a small derringer in her purse, but she couldn't reach for it easily. "W-who are you?" she said, feeling the need to whisper as well, not turning around.

"That is unimportant for now," the man continued in whispering tones. He leaned away but his whispers remained clear as if spoken directly into her ear. "The real question is this: do you want this case solved or not?"

Her eyes flick up at the scene, her breath catching for a second. Solve the case? If he had evidence...and the police didn't know about it. It was tempting, she could finally establish her small detective agency as legit and quit following deadbeat fathers and divorcees around the city for a fee. She could be a real detective. Even if he was bluffing, this was too good to pass up.

Her eyes look slightly over her shoulder but not so far as to actually see him. "The police think they have it solved already. Are you saying it isn't?"

"I'm saying I think there's something off," he replied, his eyes staying staring ahead of him and his expression carefully neutral. "There are better places to discuss such worries. Say, the nearest place to get a decent cup of coffee?"

It was a riddle but he figured she was smart enough to catch on. If she wasn't--then he didn't need to speak with her.

"Wait awhile." I'll go first, his words implied. "Ten minutes." Don't take too long.

Marsala's. On the corner just a block from here. She knew the place well. Joe's Diner was closer but the coffee was horrid, everyone who lived here knew that. She nods, half turning around, "Who do I ask --..." There's no one behind her. "--for?" There is only the rain soaked street and the crowd starting to disperse because the show is over. The coroner's van is taking the body away and the police are already taking down the tape.

Jackie stands there in the rain, looking for him among the people left. How could he be gone that fast? Something was definitely off here. She steadied herself, her heart thumping loud in her chest at the close encounter.

One thing was clear, she had to find out what was going on. Whether it was dangerous or not. Her watch said nine minutes had passed but she was anxious and started walking quickly towards the cafe she was certain he meant.

The place is nearly deserted, the lunch crowd having already left. Jackie pauses with her hand on the door, looking inside to make sure she has the right place.

Just as in the crowd, he was barely visible here even in the nearly empty cafe. He made the dark corner look unoccupied despite his obvious presence after a second glance. He blended in to the background so well. A little too well.

He glanced up when she entered the small cafe, just long enough for his green eye to catch her's out of the shadow, and back down again, leaving him shrouded once more in anonymity.

Jackie stood stock still as her eyes found his in the darkness. There was a half second of doubt, maybe she shouldn't have come. Maybe she shouldn't have come alone. But instead of turning on her heels and bolting, she swallowed her apprehensions and stepped forwards towards his corner.

She slides into the booth carefully, putting her purse in her lap. Better to have the derringer closer this time. Just in case. "So..." she begins, watching him carefully. "You have me and my curiosity here." The ball was very much in his court.
