Should the Roman Catholic Church reform itself?

Sep 17, 2005 21:12

Alright. Like I said about a week ago, I'm back. The journal will rarely have entries about personal stuff, unless it's really important. This is just going to be a nice place to discuss issues in our town, state, world, whatever the hell you want it to be. Today, the issue is the Roman Catholic Church, and its priests ( Read more... )

Obviously the fact that these priests are forced to remain chaste is causing a problem and causing them to resort to criminal offenses like sexual abuse or adultery, etc. It is their choice to become a priest; they know the responsibility involved and they know right from wrong. However, as far as changing religious traditions and whatnot...the only person who can do that is the Pope, correct? I don't believe he would change this age-old law and furthermore, there are so many people who would be against it that it'd be impossible anyway.

I believe that every person is a sexual being. We are made to reproduce, whether we want to or not (I'm pro birth control and pro-choice, by the way), and restricting one's sexual side is unhealthy. These priests have been starved for releasing their sexualness, which psychologically leads to the breaking of their sacred commandments and laws of our nation. In essence, these priests are being hurt by their faith rather than helped.

I don't think I have anything else to say...hm.

They're really sexually frustrated, and religion or no religion everybody wants someone. With all due respect to God, you can't physically be involved with the lord and the lord alone. I think molesting little boys is disgusting and that if they were aloud to marry adult woman (or adult men, but figuring the Church's strong conservative views I don't see that happening anytime soon.) the Roman Catholic church would gain respect.

You know what? Good for fucking Monsignor Clark.

and I've heard around the rumor mill that priests were aloud to get Maried back in the day, but they modified that rite for tax resons :O

Well I don't even think most of these priests are even gay. Its the fact that they are physically starved that they resort to this sort of thing. Obviously they associate these boys with passion and love of some sort, with some relation to religion...you'd have to ask a psychologist for the rest.

No, I don't believe they're gay either, but I think it's more along the lines of this. Little boys are easy pray, vulnerable, easy to manipulate and they give affection freely to members of the same sex because they don't understand the concept of love period, let alone homosexuality.

But I don't think they are the targets simply because they're "vulnerable and easy to manipulate" (etc)--that implies that the priests maliciously did theset things, that they planned it all out with evil intentions. These priests are most likely not plotting to commit a sin, rather they find themselves acting on it because of their deprivation and its effects on their minds.

I was born a Roman Catholic. Although now I consider myself an agnostic, I still find interest in the going-ons of the Church. These sex scandals are perhaps the most controversial thing to hit the Church in a while, besides that Dan Brown yammer (I do believe in that alternate-Church stuff, but since it can't immediately be proven, I feel that this is more important because there is visible proof. I'll make a thing on this later). I feel that because I'm not a devoted member of the Church, that I'm neither a liberal or conservative Catholic, I can judge the situation a little bit better ( ... )

I know why you said it, but using a harmful word, meant as a derogatory phrase towards people with mental challenges just makes you seem ignorant.
