He shouldn’t have been so obvious.
It was the day of the Hey!Hey!Hey! performance, the day Hey!Say!JUMP would finally show the musical world what they were made of. All ten of them were tired beyond belief, having had only a few days to get the music, the dance, the camaraderie down to an art form…or at least, make it look like they did. But they still had the show to worry about.
They still had all of Japan to impress.
They shouldn’t have worried.
The crowd seemed to be on a never-ending high, taking in everything JUMP had to give them and still begging for more.
He could feel all his troubles slip away as he danced. Rubi, J.J. Express, Johnny-san, everything seemed to vanish as the music took over his mind and body. This was why he joined the business. This was what he wanted all his life, the reason why he was alive, all for this rush of strength, this euphoric frenzy all around him.
Then why does it still feel like this?
He wondered, his back pressed against Daiki’s as they thanked the crowd. Why do I still feel so terrible?
It all rushed back to him the second he left the stage, eager to find Hasshi and Kamei.
He paused.
They were standing there, talking to Shoon and Senga. He raised his hand in a cheerful hello, only to stare as their expressions changed from happy to…that.
They were looking at him in that way, the way that they always used to look at Jin, at Kame, at Yamapi, at every one of their sempais after they debuted.
More importantly, they were looking at him the way Shoon looked at Yabu a few days ago.
Like they didn’t even know him anymore.
He could feel it bubbling up to the surface again, that raw, inexpressible feeling that tightened in his throat and choked every bit of happiness right out of his system. He pressed his hand to his shirt, his fingers tightening around the shiny, red material.
A smaller, more elegant hand wrapped around his and squeezed tightly.
“Hey.”
Takaki opened his eyes. Yabu.
The hand pulled him away.
~*/-/*~
The pain didn’t seem to exist here.
Yabu had pulled him away from the press, away from the juniors, and more importantly, away from J.J. Express into the room they had used to warm up a few hours before. It wasn’t big or fancy or anything.
But at least they were alone.
Takaki felt Yabu tug him down onto the couch and press a cold soda into his hands.
“That’s better, ne?”
He didn’t say anything. He didn’t know what to say.
“I was worried you wouldn’t get a drink, or even pause to get a second away from everything. It can get pretty overwhelming, huh?”
He was worried about him. Yabu Kota was worried about him.
“Why?”
Yabu blinked. “Why what?”
“Why were you worried about me?” He could feel the tears coming, even as he blinked them away. “Why did you save me back there?”
He rubbed his arms against his eyes. Stupid, he thought. This is no time to cry.
Yabu reached forward and pulled his arms down.
Not while you’re with Yabu.
“I didn’t think you’d want Hasshi and Kamei to see you like this.” He replied, a gentle smile gracing his lips. “After all, you still have that badboy image to protect.”
Takaki laughed.
“Hasshi and Kamei hate me.” He whispered. “They all do.”
“Because of Hey!Say!JUMP?”
“Yeah…they hate all of us.”
“But that’s not your fault, Takaki-kun.” Yabu squeezed his hand gently. “Not everything’s your fault.”
A tear fell on Yabu’s sleeve.
“It’s okay to cry, you know.”
“No, it’s not…” Takaki whispered. “Not when…”
Not when J.J. Express is falling through the cracks. Not when I’m leaving them all behind.
Yabu wrapped his arms around him.
I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.
“You know, I was wondering when you were going to crack.” Yabu whispered, rubbing Takaki’s back soothingly as he cried. “You’re trying so hard to look after Chinen and Arioka and Inoo and the juniors….I was wondering when you were going to let someone look after you.”
You would never guess it, Yabu…but I’ve always wondered the same about you.
AN: This one jumps a few days to the first performance they did as Hey!Say!JUMP. I originally wanted Yabu to catch Takaki behind the curtain and then talk to him afterwards but this flowed into writing instead. I just needed them to actually interact for once.
However, I'm a little worried that this moved a little too fast. There's more Takaki angsting (-_-, great, so I'm being mean to BOTH of them) than Yabu really but I'm not sure how to rework this one. I guess it's really up to you guys, the readers, to see whether or not it worked.
Oh and an apology about the previous installment. A lot of people were confused about whether Shoon was talking to Hikaru or to Yabu or to both of them. The real thing is that they're all there but Yabu remains quiet for most of the conversation while Hikaru tries to talk to Shoon and then he finally talks at the end. I'm sorry about the confusion! I'm planning on rewriting a bit of that chapter sometime today.
That's it, the notes are kind of short this time. Thanks for all the comments, you guys make me feel so wonderful.
Umm...Enjoy?
