i did my WC bracket at ESPN.com the other day. HERE'S HOW IT GOES:
from Group A, France slips out first, followed by Mexico.
Argentina comes out on top of Group B, with South Korea coming in second.
England conquers Group C but the United States come out close behind.
Germany and Serbia make it out of Group D which is like. a fluffy meadow type of group, so hey. whatever works.
The Netherlands and Denmark come out on top of Group E.
Group F has Italy winning and Paraguay coming out second, although i went back and forth on Paraguay for a while.
Brazil wins Group G and Portugal gets out second.
and my beloved Spain wins Group H, followed by (shocker) Switzerland.
Les Bleus beat South Korea
England beats Serbia
The Netherlands kill Paraguay
Brazil walks all over Switzerland (but hey, they made it out of the group stages, so props)
Argentina beats Mexico. i had a hard time with this one, because Argentina has no defense, basically, and sucked their way through qualifiers, but they also have Messi and Higuain, so i think their attack will be good enough.
The United States beats Germany. Germany's a mess. Tim Howard's amazing. our back line is pretty strong and we have fairly decent attacking power. basically our issue is that we can't hold on to the ball- but at the moment, neither can Germany.
Denmark beats Italy. jajajaja maybe i just have a thing for underdogs. but Italy's old and plays defensive football and relies too heavily on set pieces. Denmark has the attacking power to at least put up a good fight. and they completely coasted through qualifications.
Spain beats Portugal.
England beats France. this kills me a little but but Les Bleus just aren't on top of things right now, our keeper's recovering from injury, we have a flaky back four, and due to stupidity in calling people up, our only real attacking threats are Titi and Ribery. so i think England gets this one.
The Netherlands beat Brazil. WOAH HOLD UP, WHAT? yeah, that's right. think about it- if the Netherlands can get the ball out of the midfield, they'll have it. cesar's a good goalie, but between Van Nistelrooy, Van der Vaart (he will be back, god, please), Robben, and Sneijder, someone will find the back of the net. Van der Sar is a good goalie and i think the Dutch midfield will be strong enough to break down Brazil. not to say that this will be an easy game, by any means- I predict a 2-1 thriller, possibly with an overtime period.
The United States beats Argentina. again with the underdog! but let's face facts: Argentina is so sloppy right now. Maradona's an awful coach, Messi hasn't been on form with the NT as of late, and Higuain's their only other real attacking threat. that said, Higuain's pretty fearsome, but Tim Howard's up for the challenge. Argentina's defense is flaky at best and i think we'll be able to put the ball through to goal.
Spain beats Denmark. no long explanation here. Spain is Spain and Denmark is Denmark, which means Spain wins.
The Netherlands beat England. really, it's a miracle England made it this far. and the Dutch are a strong team (obviously, i've got them beating Brazil. England doesn't stand a chance.) i predict 2-0.
Spain beats the United States, in a 2-0 revenge match for the Confederations Cup.
Spain beats the Netherlands 3-2, i think. not totally sold on the scoreline because i hate Iker being scored on, but i think Spain will score 3, and i can't see the Netherlands going down without a fight. now, i know it's a long shot that the Dutch will make this stage of the tournament, but hey, it my bracket, i do what i want. so. a brace from Villa and icing on the cake from Torres. whoever controls the midfield wins this game, and i think La Roja has a much better midfield set up than the Netherlands.
I'M EXCITED, GUYS. in case you couldn't tell.
