I've told you my solution to that....

Don't let the tank go empty! I fill up at the 1/2 tank mark now...it's not as much "shock" at the pump to put in $25-30, or as much drain on my wallet/account all at once. I do this about every 4-5 days, instead of every 8-9 days, and for us it helps.

Nooooo...you don't get half a tank...you get a FULL tank, you fill up when your tank is 1/2 full already...don't let it get empty. It's supposed to be better for overall fuel economy anyway, so my dad says...LOL. C
Just relax and try to be zen about it. $6.00/gallon is just around the corner. While gas may wobble a bit, it's been exponentially growing for a couple of years. This is peak oil. Converting to more efficient uses and alternative fuels will hurt. Eventually there will be better public transport, etc.
For me, I commute on my motorcycle (40 mpg) whenever I don't need to carry more than my laptop. Otherwise, I drive my Acura Integra (~30 mpg). When we buy our next vehicle, it will be a hybrid or fuel cell. After we buy a home this summer (hopefully within 5 miles of work), maybe I'll start biking again.
As annoying as it is, this trend will not change. Fuel will only increase in price. The demand is rising as the rest of the world starts living like us, and supply is falling as we've used up much of the easy to extract oil.
FYI - $4.30/gal here in SoCal = $40 to fill my acura and $13 to fill the motorcycle.

It's hard to relax about it. Our options for alternate transportation are nill. No buses run up here, carpooling is out, and there's no way I'm strapping my kid onto the back of a Harley (as much as he might enjoy that LOL). The Vue gets an average of 28 mpg so that's helpful, but...dayum.
This is getting ridiculous! We now plan what errands are worthy to do "now" and which can wait until we can make one big trip.
Mark drives a company car (with company gas card) and everyone has been getting declined because you can't have a transaction over $50. It costs a lot more than that to fill up their Ford Escapes.

It has some good bits, even for us mini gas guzzlers who can't afford to trade-in. In the meantime, I'm staying home as much as possible this summer!
