“Unnie?”

Qri sighs. She hesitates before opening her eyes and turning around in the bed to face Soyeon.

“Yes?”

“Do you sometimes just lie in your bed and wonder if there’s a meaning to life?”

Qri fights against the grimace that’s about to replace her composed expression. She sighs once again, smiling a little and shaking her head.

“Do we really need to discuss this at two in the morning?”

Soyeon huffs. “I can’t sleep.” When Qri doesn’t say anything, she goes on. “Would you rather we talked about the food on the ship?”

“I’d rather we didn’t talk at all,” Qri scoffs and Soyeon’s lips curl downwards.

“But it’s not that late yet!” Soyeon argues, propping her elbow on the bed. “Whenever I want to talk to you you’re always so repulsive.”

“Because you only want to talk when I’m either busy or trying to sleep,” Qri squints. Soyeon looks away.

“It’s you who tend not to answer my calls,” Qri adds, deliberately coloring her voice with some resentment.

Soyeon hesitates, still avoiding Qri’s eyes before turning back to her and flashing her an apologetic smile. “But Qri, you know why that is…”

Qri rolls her eyes. “Yes, yes. You’re too lazy to talk on the phone, but you know who believes that. You just probably don’t like me enough to gift me with your company.”

Soyeon scoffs. “Guilt-tripping me won’t help me fall asleep faster, Qri.”

The older smiles a little and lightly shrugs her shoulders.

“Anyway,” Soyeon pouts, “I’ve been wondering that when we go home, I should buy one of those cute bear clothes for Totoro you bought for Bappuli…”

“Shh, do you hear that?” Qri suddenly interrupts and Soyeon blinks, curiously staring at the older.

“No, what is it? I don’t hear anything.”

“Exactly. It’s the sound of people who care about what you’re saying.”

“Qri! That was mean!” Soyeon hurls and gently slaps the other’s shoulder who’s seemingly fighting the urge to break into some sort of evil laughter. “It’s usually my job to be mean to the members…”

“Well, it can’t always be you, can it,” Qri says and then rolls over, showing her back to Soyeon and hoping that the younger gets the hint.

For some time, either of them says a word. Qri hears her fellow member’s slow-paced, regular breathing from behind and it’s a sound that calms her. A small smile breaks across her face and she closes her eyes, silently murmuring a thank you that finally she shut up.

“Perhaps I should buy a totoro outfit for Totoro instead of a bear one…” Soyeon murmurs after a minute and Qri sighs, hastily sitting up.

“You really can’t just shut up, can you?”

Soyeon gives her an overly innocent smile. “It’s one of my charms.”

Qri crosses her arms. “What charms?”

“Oh, don’t ask me to list them all. I don’t think it would do any good for your self-esteem.”

“My self-esteem is fine, thank you.”

“If I were as pretty as you I would probably not have any problems either,” Soyeon replies and then suddenly widens her eyes as if not wanting to believe that she just said that.

Qri’s irritation disperses at once; she stares at Soyeon with an incomprehensible expression that the younger can’t put a finger on.

“You’re just as pretty as me, Soyeon. If not prettier.”

“You know, saying that won’t make me forget all those hurtful things you just said,” Soyeon says sarcastically, but the smile spreading across her lips is genuine.

The leader sighs, and then lies back, still not facing Soyeon.

“I have no idea how Boram endures in one room with you all the time…” she murmurs under her breath, too quietly for Soyeon to hear who once again remains quiet. For real now, Qri hopes.

She wonders if she’s the same with Boram whenever suffering from insomnia like tonight; does she also look for Boram’s company when she can’t sleep or does she rather play something on her phone? Boram’s probably already asleep by the point Soyeon realizes that she can’t sleep. Qri makes a mental note to go to sleep while Soyeon’s showering if they ever become roommates again.

Which, despite everything, Qri wouldn’t mind at all, honestly.

There’s that fluttering tinge in her tummy again; the same feeling she had when Soyeon announced, all grinning, that they would be sharing a room on the cruise ship. She recalls the playful and somewhat evil smirk the younger flashed her as she whispered into her ear (“Brace yourself for a night alone with me, you definitely won’t sleep!”) followed by a mischievous laughter. Qri remembers how she blushed just a little after hearing that - at that point, she never would’ve guessed that by not letting her sleep, Soyeon actually meant that she’ll bother her by talking way too much.

What an ultimate letdown, truthfully.

“Unnie, what do you think I should wear tomorrow?”

That’s it - that’s what puts Soyeon and her never-ending blabber just beyond the threshold of Qri’s self-control. Qri turns around, rapidly, not thinking as she hovers over the shocked Soyeon and presses her lips on the younger’s, hard and demanding and for a brief second, Qri’s not sure if she wants Soyeon to shut up or if she just wants her and maybe, just maybe, she doesn’t even want to sleep anymore.

When they part, Qri steals only a quick glance at Soyeon’s wide eyes, utterly surprised face (and slightly parted lips, still moist from their kiss) before stopping a smirk from breaking out. She lies down, turning away from the younger in complete silence.

“Now really do go to sleep.”

It’s only a matter of time (one, two, three, four, five, six, seven seconds, Qri counts) before Soyeon groans. “You’re not seriously asking me to go to sleep after that, are you?!”

With her eyes tightly shut, Qri’s lips curl into a wide, smug grin and taking her time she slowly, very slowly turns around.
