oh, just because i wanted someplace that would be expressly for my commentary on art, literature, etc., not because i think i'm saying anything important, but because it's the only way i can ensure that i'm reading/viewing, etc. actively. so now i read something and then look up some essays on it, and then write a reaction. and that's where i post it.
I was just wondering if we've met? My name's Meg Hurtado, I graduated UR in May, and I was one of Brian Henry's poetic-favorites, etc..... but even if we haven't met, I love your arts&fetters blog. Jules et Jim is one of my very very favorite movies.
Also, i'm curious about how you know James Tate? I saw him read at Richmond and loved him.
Meg--I doubt we've met, I didn't attend UR nor have I ever been active in Richmond's arts scene. James Tate, I don't really know him, but I've run into him a few times and always took the opportunity to speak with him, I also saw him read when he was publicizing what I think was his most recent book, I think the cover is blue and has a picture of a horse on it, perhaps, he was very funny, although it's his early work, the stuff that made him famous, that I find touching. I'm glad you like the arts&fetters blog--I think you're the first person who's ever looked at it! It's really something I need to get back to writing...mostly I've been trying to scan it over and hide all the naughty entries.
oh yeah. 'return to the city of white donkeys'. that's what he was promoting when he was at richmond. brian said that right after the reading he demanded to be taken to the ABC store for his bottle of gin. awesome man.
ah, yes, i forgot he drank, he had a reputation for that and for being quite nasty, and the rumors behind it were that he had won the award, i assume the yale younger poets, that at the time was quite prestigious and since then has become less so, so he can't really rest on it like he once did, and that furthermore, he hit his peak at a young age and has, at the very least, had to rest on that. that he's discontent, and somehow lost the fire. these are only rumors. i wouldn't know. he seems different from picasso, though, who might be said to have been in the same situation, striking fame at a young age, the freedom to pursue his art in a world where it increasingly didn't matter, and remained prolific and, from what i've read, kindly. oh well. hoorah for james tate anyway.
