"His father thinks it's *our* fault?" Hannah asked, incredulously. She was leaning casually against Peter's desk, staring at him as he paced and finished telling her about the meeting with the social worker.

"Evidently so," he retorted, sighing hard as he ran a hand over his face. "He thinks that we 'convinced' Scott that this is what he believes and that Elaine isn't at fault in any way."

"Unbelievable," she breathed, shaking her head. "The man must be an utter idiot," she said frankly after a moment's thought.

Peter nodded and dropped down onto the couch only to lean back into it and shake his head in disgust. "Or so completely lost in his 'love' that he can't believe his own blood. I don't know. Either way, the man is a fool and is going to wind up losing his son if he keeps it up. In fact, the social worker said I'd be best off not contacting Mr. Barringer at all. I think he believes Scott, but the evidence isn't there to support it."

Her fingers laced together across her stomach as she absorbed this. "What a
mess. Does Scott know?"

Sighing, he shook his head. "Shit, Hannah, I just got him settled into all this as it is! He's just gotten to where he trusts me! Trusts us...and is willing to trust the process to a certain degree. I'm half afraid of what he'll do if he finds out the truth..." The pain and concern that filled his eyes was real, almost too real as he stared down at his hands and thought about what to do next.

Her heart ached in that moment. Both for Scott, who was so broken on the inside, and Peter who seemed to think he might be able to fix him. "He needs
to know," she said softly. "You know he does."

"I know, Hannah...I know..." His head jerked up at the sound of a door slamming in the outer room. "What was that?" Peter was instantly off the couch and across the room. His office door was slightly ajar and he had it open and was through it in a fraction of a second.

Hannah followed on his heels, arriving just behind him to see the figure that was fleeing. "Oh God, it's Scott," she realized.

He closed his eyes and simply stood there for a moment. "Shit," he cursed, shaking his head in disgust with himself. "I better go after him..."

She rested a restraining hand on her friend's shoulder. "Peter... Maybe you
should let him work this one out on his own for a little bit."

"What if he tries to run again?" he demanded, staring off into the darkness after the boy who had managed to steal his heart in such a few short weeks. Peter knew he couldn't bend the rules any more for the young teen in order to keep him there. If anything happened now, Scott would have to deal with the consequences.

"From what you've told me, and what I've seen over the last few days, I don't think he will. At least, not like he did that first night."

"You're usually right about these things you know?" he asked ruefully, turning to smile slightly over at her as he lifted a hand to squeeze her hand briefly where it still lay on his shoulder.

"Just like you were right about him," Hannah answered softly.

Peter smiled slightly at that. "Yeah, yeah, I suppose I was, wasn't I?"

She laughed. "Yes, you were. Just don't go and get an inflated ego about it." Growing serious she added, "Let's give him an hour or two, then go after him."

His gaze returned to the darkness where he'd watched Scott disappear into the trees. Slowly, he nodded in agreement and let her draw him back into his office. It was time to step back and let him work through some things on his own.
