You are left on a desert island. You are given enough food and supplies for one year. Among your supplies are a solar powered combo tv/dvd player. Sadly the list of movies you sent to be left on the island got corrupted in email and on the first five were included. What five movies do you have with you, and why?

Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope
Aside from the rabid cult following this movie has gathered over the years, few movies have had the impact on how movies are made as this film has. A simple tale of the hero's journey in the form of a young farmer finding out he is actually heir to a legacy of amazing power holds up well, (if not to the near god like status it has been elevated to in some places) and does it's job of drawing you in to an escape from reality for a few hours very well.

Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Even the brief version clocks in at over three hours and still doesn't contain the detail and some of the charm of the book's ending, that's no reason to hold it against it. Indeed, in some places the movie does a better job than the book at conveying the huge scope of events.

Majo no takkyûbin
A young witch sets off for a year of training away from home and finds new friends and trouble in a new city. This is master animator Hayao Miyazaki at his finest. You can't find animation this good in the US. If the story doesn't sound like it interests you give it a watch for no other reason to see what non Disney work can look like.

Deep Impact
Also known as the movie that got slaughtered by Armageddon at the box office. One of the reasons I like this film so much is they do a much better job on the science of an asteroid hit than Armageddon did. Also it stars Elijah Wood before he was Frodo Baggins and Leelee Sobieski who is quite easy on the eyes.

The Last Starfighter
The first mainstream movie to make extensive use of computer graphics. They were so good that when I was a child this movie seemed real to me. Yeah...yeah...I know. What can I say, it was the 80's, we were all idiots. Once again the story of the hero's journey from handyman to galactic savior. Watching it now in places seems too ooze cheese, but it holds a fond place in the heart.
