What follows is my spoiler free free review of
The Dark Knight
Cut for those who don't want a movie review.
I'm Batman
With these words Michael Keaton did something that very few actors ever accomplish in their careers. He captured the essence of a role. Forever after he would be the cowled one. {No slight to Christian Bale, who turns a capable performance as Batman.} In this same vein, Heath Ledger has captured the Joker so well, that it will be impossible to see anyone else in the role.
With the perfect balance of menace and insanity Ledger portrays a villain who is only that and nothing more. A villain. He isn't concerned about mundane things such as right and wrong. He doesn't want money, power, or fame. He simply wants chaos and as much of it as possible.
Overall this movie hits its mark perfectly. It aimed to be an action fueled summer blockbuster and it accomplishes that with ease. My only nitpick is that one of the side plot's feels a bit...superfluous? Perhaps that isn't the right word. Rushed may be closer to what it felt. In any case it's a small quibble and does nothing to subtract from the movie's aims.
Summary: As far as Superhero movies go this is cream of the crop. If you want some way to beat the summer heat for a few hours you would be hard pressed to find better entertainment than The Dark Knight.
Final Rating:
5 out of 5 sticky shoes
I have to say I am enjoying the rebooted Caped Crusader more than any of the previous installments. Not as dark (and at the same time more complex than) Burton's version. Not as campy as Batman and Robin, to say nothing of the abomination that was Batman Forever.
