I think it was the part where I formatted the c drive and then couldn't reinstall windows on it. I am looking for an xp disk that will work, but so far no go.

Sounds like you need to format it again. What are you doing when you format it? If the drive worked before, there's no reason it shouldn't work after formatting it. Sure, something could have happened while formatting, but it's rather unlikely.
