We go on, heart beats strong, still whole, unbroken, as we divide our love goodbye, thanks for the time, time of my life.
Lily knew the moment she flooed into the living room that it was over.
The house was silent. There were no sounds of someone moving about upstairs, a cough or a loud exhale. The house creaked around her, but nobody moved.
On the coffee table, one picture sat where before there had been five. The heel of her shoe caught in the plush carpet as she moved, it dragged her down, burned at her knees. On the floor, knees pressed to the carpet, hands pressed to the table, she could see which photo was left. Her favourite day - Disney World, two years ago. Her hair had curled with the humidity, her face was red with burn. Georgia looked perfect, as always. Silken hair and a glowing tan. Her arms were wrapped around Georgia like she couldn’t imagine letting go. Her head tossed back with laughter, and Georgia pressed a kiss to her cheek.
She looked happy, impossibly happy, she thought. She hadn’t looked at that picture in too long.
Maybe, she thought as she stumbled to her feet, I didn’t want to see us happy together.
She abandoned her heels at the bottom of the stairs, her skirt halfway up it and her sweater by the bedroom door. The wardrobe was half empty, the sink only half as cluttered as before. No note was stuck to the mirror, the place they’d always left notes.
It was over, she thought. But she wasn’t upset.
Alone again in Paris, travel drained I write to you, you've been on my mind, cold days, long nights, a rooftop in Berlin I call, confess the state I'm in, these cities, this view, I see nothing without you.
Once upon a time, Lily had loved her job. She’d loved being sent to only the most beautiful places, she’d loved the adventure, the exploration. She’d loved the escape from Britain’s grey skies and the constant presence of her mother.
She’d thought she still loved her job. She’d thought she’d still fallen in love with each and every city, still craved the adventure and the exploration. She’d always missed Britain’s grey skies and her mother, in the back of her mind, but one day, she woke up, and it was like she nothing needed more but a day of rain and her mother calling three times in an hour to check on things.
More than that, she realized, she wanted Georgie, Georgie and her jokes and her bookshelves lined with things that hurt Lily to even contemplate.
Georgie, each letter would start, I miss you.
I was lost until that night we kissed, given up on life, so darling, know this, you're worth more than how this city lets you down
It started with a kiss, at exactly the right time. A kiss when someone wasn’t sure what their life meant anymore, if their job was really worth it, if they still wanted to be living with their parents at twenty three. A kiss when someone had watched her brothers marry and hadn’t quite accepted that that wasn’t hers to have. A kiss when someone was expecting a nephew and didn’t know if she could accept that yet.
It was the start of something, but nobody knew that yet.
