The Last Winter
The next winter, snow fell like it has every winter. It crunched under Cho's boots. The sensations were all familiar, much too familiar. She hadn't planned to come back here-- not now, not ever. Cho found she was not as strong as she liked to imagine herself. Under the soft white flakes that danced in the shivering wind, the memories came flooding back. Everything was exactly the same: the weather, the scent of cold and wetness. Maybe she returned to know that, to know that this place had not changed.
But they had. This copse of trees where she and Cedric had first exchanged adoring gazes had never been made of only trees. The place itself didn't matter. This could never be the same without him here. Nothing ever would be, she finally understood.
Maybe that was why she had returned: to know the finality of her loss for what it was, and to shoulder that alone. Not weak at all, but strong, very strong, she thought herself, as she turned from the trees for the last time.

Glumbumble Eggs
He avoided her gaze the next time her saw her, and the time after that, until it had become such a habit that he wasn't sure how to meet her eyes at all. He remembered her torn clothes, bloody knees, the fowl food they'd let Pettigrew take down the stairs for her, the way Pettigrew had eyed her-- had he touched her? Every time he wondered it, Draco shuddered anew.
Luckily, they lived in very different spheres. Unluckily, their children went to Hogwarts together and sometimes they did see each other.
And of course it was Luna who was always the better person. She saw Draco's shame and saw through it. "Draco Malfoy, you never look at me. Do you have Glumbumble Eggs in your eyes?"
"Huh."
"Nevermind. I forgive you."

Children of Known Death Eaters
"Hufflepuff!"
It took a moment for Gregory Goyle to register what had just happened. No one had even accused him of being a quick thinker. When he did understand, though, adrenaline rushed into his limbs. He stood, tearing the hat off his head and slamming it to the floor.
"It's a liar! It lies!" It had to lie. If it didn't, his father would kill him. For many people, that might be an exaggeration, but in his case, it was not.
"Oh dear," Dumbledore said, frowning. "Perhaps we should put the hat on once more to make sure."
McGonagall looked visibly affronted at the suggestion, but she complied regardless. As soon as she put the hat on Goyle's head, it shouted, "Slytherin!"

"Albus, that was highly irregular."
"Minerva..." Dumbledore looked over his spectacles at her. Behind him, Fawkes fluttered restlessly. "The boy's father is a ruthless Death Eater. The boy does not belong in Hufflepuff."
"Albus, you can't interfere with the sorting this way!"
"You know why I feel I must."
"I know that every student is not Sirius Black! Some people may really belong in a different house than their parents."
"Perhaps... but not while Harry is in the castle. No, let's keep known Death Eaters in Slytherin."
"You mean children of known Death Eaters, don't you?"
"Huh? Oh, yes."
