I am interested in reading a Civil War book. Since you are a history buff, do you recommend any? I am looking for something that tells what happened at each battle site...etc.
My #1 recommendation would be "Battle Cry of Freedom" by James McPherson. McPherson is a renowned Civil War historian and a great writer, and the book gives a lot of good detail not only on the battles of the war, but also its personalities--the politicians and generals--and the beginning provides a great overview of the events leading up to the war, its causes, etc. It was the first book I was assigned to read in my Civil War 101 course in college, and looking back I don't think he could've assigned a better book to get us started. It is a bit lengthy though, but very readable. If you want something shorter, try "The Civil War" by Bruce Catton. I haven't personally read it, but my Civil War professors almost all cited Catton as being the author that got them hooked on the subject. That book is a little under half the length of "Battle Cry of Freedom".
