The dictionary.com word of the day is "Shibboleth" and I'm having West Wing flashbacks. Except that I actually can't remember what that word was testing in the episode now that I think of it. I know they were using it as a password, but I don't think they were testing the refugees ability to say the "sh" sound ( Read more... )

Gossip Girl is light and fun. I appreciate that sort of television.

Hi! I think I friended you years ago and we never really struck up a conversation besides my initial appreciation for your fic (IIRC, we both like Chase on House). But I recently returned to my languishing LJ account and saw your post. The West Wing is one of my favorite shows! In Shibboleth, the second season Thanksgiving ep, there were Chinese illegal refugees claiming that they deserved asylum for religious reasons, as they were being persecuted for being Christian. The "shibboleth" conversation with a refugee was supposedly a test to see if they were actually practicing Christians, but Bartlet would have let them stay anyway. The refugee, at any rate, was actually a Christian, and quoted the "shibboleth" bible verse that Bartlet had quoted earlier in the episode. It's a great episode (Charlie and the carving knife was an awesome subplot). Hope this helps!

ahh, thanks! :D I think I remember that now! Though I forgot that that was also the Thanksgiving episode. Loved the subplot with Charlie and the carving knife...

You absolutely have to watch Gossip Girl. And then call me and talk about it.

LOL HOW DID I NOT KNOW YOU WATCHED GOSSIP GIRL?

More reason to watch it, I guess! I need to find somewhere where I can rent the DVDs now...

I was going to tell you the significance of "shibboleth" in the WW episode but someone beat me to it. I'm watching the entire series from season one with Heather and Chris.

Bentley officially took up residency today. :) Orpheus won't let you pet him unless you wash your hands first. He can't handle smelling The Intruder on us. He'll get over it. Bentley is playing with all the cat toys Orpheus is too snobby to appreciate.

omg Bentley! Kitten! Post pictures :D :D :D LOL at Orpheus and the hand-washing thing. Such a snob.

Would tomorrow be an okay day to call you? I'd say today but I am dead-tired for some reason and having trouble forming complete sentences D: Two cups of coffee did nothing!

I'm going to post pictures of the kitten ASAP! He is adorable; you'd love him. Orpheus hates him (and us) SO MUCH. I keep telling Orpheus that he is a rescue cat also, and that if it weren't for us he would still be a "Sweat Kitty" on Craigslist. I mean, a new kitten can't possibly be worse than 10 hours in the cat carrier on I-5, right??

Tomorrow would be a good day to call! I will be at work all day, but usually I can chat while keeping an eye on the kids. In the evening I'll be hanging out with Madeline and wishing you were there too. :)
