I'm putting the Pep Talk behind a cut for posterity but I'm also going to c/p the parts that rubbed me the wrong way below below, so you only have to read the whole dribbly thing if you want to.

I love you. For this. Yes. Totally.

He needs to learn that not all people are Peter Carey.

(BTW WHAT THE HELL HAS HE WRITTEN? I DO NOT RECOGNIZE HIS NAME.)

Yayy, I'm glad you agree XD I wondered if it was just me the first time I read it.

(AND I DON'T EITHER. MAYBE HE'S TOO LITERARY FOR THE LIKES OF ME??)

yeeeeah, this reeks of pretense

where would any art be if there were not all sorts of different kinds of artists and we all got our inspiration from different places? Maybe it takes him 20 times to write a chapter because he is drawing the whole damn thing from a black hole.

Stephen King's "how to be a writer" (Memoir Of The Craft--half autobiography and half manual/tips of the trade) was much better.

so agreeing with that! I love that books; it's got to be one of the best on writing out there. Though I'm also a huge fan of The Lie That Tells a Truth.

I loved both parts of it; Stephen King is really interesting. He only has 56789784123787 ideas and stories and characters, and he often brings up shit that really makes me think. I don't even care if it's cliché to like his stuff--maybe a lot of people do because it's good.

The only similarity I see in everything SK wrote and that douchewaffle you quoted is A) read a lot (well duh, but SK doesn't say READ OR YOU'RE NOT AN AUTHOR, he says READ SO YOU CAN ABSORB OTHER WRITING STYLES AND IDEAS) and B) Turn off the TV. Because it's a distraction, not because it's worthless. Which I totally agree with--it is a distraction when you're trying to write, at least for me. The sound of voices and the jingly music and announcer's voices on commercials GRATE GRATE GRATE. I turn almost everything off when I'm trying to write (except the internet which is honestly just about as bad of a distraction OOPS) because I'm so easily distracted, but it's stupid to say or imply television is nothing but a brain-rot box ALL THE TIME. Sure, turn it off when ( ... )

LOL I was just thinking of Arrested Development in terms of good TV! So freaking brilliant...I would love to read a novel LIKE THAT!

But yeah, that's a more sensible interpretation of "turn off the TV". Even though I think Petr Carey doesn't believe in leisure activity or something. I can't focus with the TV on either, but we really only use ours to watch TV on DVD or watch Glee on Wednesday nights. We never just have it on to have it on. When I want trashy entertainment, I usually go for trashy books (hey there poppy z!) or trashy fanfiction instead.

Wow, he sounds like such a douche :/ Sorry, dude, lost me at If you wish to watch TV, you do not want to be a serious writer.

yeah, I wasn't that happy with the pep talk from the beginning but that was the point where I felt the need to rant >/

First, turn off your television. The television is your enemy. It will stop you doing what you wish to do. If you wish to watch TV, you do not want to be a serious writer, which is fine.

Yeah, this is pretty pretentious. Moderation in all things, I believe. According to Mr. Carey I will probably never be a "serious writer" but I will enjoy what I'm doing, by God!
