Character's Name: Kurosaki Hisoka
Series: Yami no Matsuei
Timeline: The end of chapter 67 from the Hana to Yume installments, AKA the last we ever see him in the series, due to the mangaka's possibly permanent hiatus.

Canon Resource Link: Unfortunately, very few comprehensive sites exist for YnM any more, and those that do focus almost solely on the anime.

Hisoka was born first son to the cursed Kurosaki family on October 18, 1980. His supernatural skills appeared at a young age, having a very powerful empathic sixth sense, and once his parents discovered this, they kept him locked away from the rest of the world, ashamed to have such a monster bear their family name but still needing the family heir. Therefore, Hisoka suffered severe emotional abuse and neglect from the age of five or perhaps even younger, his empathy enhancing the trauma even more. This lasted several years, his only refuge being his late night walks where he could sneak out and actually have some peace. It was during one of these, when he was thirteen, that he encountered Muraki Kazutaka, the series' resident psycho murderer, rapist, and doctor. >>;; What a resume.

Anyway, Hisoka came upon Muraki as he was committing another one of his murders under the sakura trees. Before he could run, the murderer caught him, and since he was such a "beautiful, beautiful boy," he was then raped and made into a living, breathing, bleeding canvas on which Muraki carved winding curse marks all over his body. (Might I again emphasize the extra trauma his empathy would add to this experience.) Muraki then erased his memory of this night, but the curse marks remained, causing what appeared to be an incurable illness that slowly rotted Hisoka's body away until finally killing him at the age of sixteen. His death, ironically, was the point at which his 'life' started looking up.

Hearing rumors after his death that he might have been murdered, Hisoka accepted a job offer to be hired as a Shinigami in the afterlife, with the intent to find out whether the rumors were true, and if they were, to find his killer. And thus he became Tsuzuki Asato's partner, and after quite a rough start (involving accusations at gunpoint), he succeeded in his objective. Unfortunately, this involved Muraki brutally returning his memories to him and also kidnapping him to use as bait for Tsuzuki, since the older man was Muraki's newest toy and interest, but through this experience Hisoka learned that Tsuzuki's foolish facade isn't necessarily the truth of what's underneath.

Throughout the series Tsuzuki and Hisoka's bond deepens and by the end, during a bout of suicidal behavior from Tsuzuki (l-long story this is his bit to explain T_T;;), Hisoka proves that through his friendship and partnership and perhaps more *cough*, his cold nature has melted and risks everything just to be by Tsuzuki's side, whether this means to give him a reason to live again or to die by his side. Luckily the former happens. As Tsuzuki and Hisoka recover after this event, Hisoka makes it known to Tsuzuki that Muraki is still alive.

Time passes and Tsuzuki slowly recovers from this event, but Hisoka by this time realizes that Tsuzuki may not always be as strong as he appears to be, and that he might just be holding him back. Luckily, around the same time, Tsuzuki voices to Tatsumi (the department secretary / unofficial boss / whatever) that he's afraid he might lose it again and Hisoka needs a way to protect himself. This starts the Gensoukai arc, in which Tsuzuki and Hisoka travel into the 'imaginary world' (AAAAH ENGLISH TRANSLATION DX) to find Hisoka a shikigami, or guardian god. As Hisoka plows through challenge after challenge, he accidentally nabs a spanish(?) cactus shikigami named Riko that's a perfect foil to his personality realizes that none of these small fry are anything near what he's looking for. This is when he hears about Kurikara, the fire dragon king that had caused a giant war throughout the imaginary world thousands of years before. Against Tsuzuki's advice (and everyone else's, really), Hisoka journeys to the desert dimension where Kurikara had been banished after his defeat, aided by an accidental wormhole warp. Once there, he repeatedly demands that Kurikara allow him to challenge him, which ends terribly. Riko is killed trying to defend Hisoka from Kurikara's servant sword, and Hisoka is left rotting from the after effects of Kurikara's fire. He only survives the encounter when Kotarou and Kojirou - twin Tengu (crow-like gatekeepers) - come to his rescue, taking him back to the Tengu's realm.

Tsuzuki later catches up with him and brings him back to where everyone else is waiting and preparing to wage war against the escaped Kurikara. To everyone's surprise, however, Kurikara finally listens to Hisoka's demands to give him a challenge, and sends him flying through a wormhole, presumably off to face some test or another. Unfortunately, this is where Matsushita-sensei concluded the series, in an epic cliffhanger of doom.

Hisoka is a very private and introverted person. He comes across as very indifferent and distant to most new acquaintances, and is rather socially awkward. Usually spending more time with books than with people, the only person that can really get him talking is Tsuzuki, since Hisoka's slacker of a partner needs to be verbally beaten into shape from time to time in order to get things done and stop driving Hisoka crazy goddammit. With Tsuzuki, he can be anything from soft and caring to fretful to the ultimate bitchy sullen teenager from hell. ♥ Another thing to note is that Hisoka is also remarkably awkward around his peers, since he never had friends his age and is very mature for his age in most cases. Often he may just withdraw and become quiet out of lack of things to say, or become irritated with said individual. He's a sweetheart though rly. D:

After the events in Kyoto, Hisoka starts showing rather obsessive traits regarding wanting to be powerful and be seen as an adult among his coworkers, which somethings clouds his sense of reason and leads to reckless decisions, and then ill results. Riko's death was a slap in the face to him, and now he feels equal parts regret and the desire to keep moving forward, so Riko's death would not be in vain. This conflict of two extremes is likely to make him be both overly-calculating as well as impulsive, depending on the situation he is placed in.

What your character can offer: Hisoka can't handle extreme hot or cold weather and is also remarkably frail, but this does not keep him from having some traditional martial arts training (kendo, aikido, sword drawing, archery). His psychic abilities are top notch, rather towards the end of hypersensitive, since his empathy causes difficulties when dealing with crowds or close proximity to "projectors" - people who feel things very loudly - and therefore he dislikes being touched. (The exceptions to this are Tsuzuki and Tatsumi. Tsuzuki for codependency warm fuzzy reasons, and Tatsumi because he's a friggin psychic deadzone.)

He has some ability with ofuda, though nothing like Tsuzuki's skill, and quite a bit of raw psychic power. When met with a stressful situation in which someone is touching him and making his empathy go haywire, he has been known to give shocks of energy that cause injuries much like electrical burns. Being a Shinigami and therefore undead, his body also regenerates endlessly and it is hinted in canon that he is both the fastest healer of the cast and through healing Kojirou in chapter 59, it is shown that he can transfer that to others without even touching them.

Also, since it applies to this comm, it should be mentioned that canon implies Hisoka is multilingual, possibly to an incredible extent (he is seen reading books in both German and Icelandic, for example, in volume 6 and elsewhere). For all intents and purposes of not being a dumb godmod, though, I will just stick with him knowing Japanese, English, and Latin, and German, for Discedo. Latin just to read, obviously, and his accent for Germanic languages is probably horrible anyway.

What items will they be bringing with them? His clothes, but pretty much nothing else. Everything he would have had on him when prepared for a crisis would have been destroyed when he first confronted Kurikara.

Third-Person Sample: He could see the bones in his hand again. The bandages must have shifted while he slept, as his body regained the mass that had rotted away and disappeared. Fingers twitched as tendons reattached and muscle knit back together, and all he could do was feel the natural burn in his lungs when he held his breath and waited for his throat to close back up. The lack of air suspended thought, at least. For the moment.

If Kojirou hadn't returned in a near-death state, Hisoka would have probably been good as new by now. Maybe saving the Tengu was selfish, in a way, if he was to remain in this condition so much longer because of it. He rather liked not thinking, after all, or at least when it came to remembering something he preferred not to. When it came to something he regretted. Hisoka hated regret. He regretted too many things already, wondering if he could have prevented things from happening in the past, if only he'd been stronger. He thought fear had been the problem, what caused him to freeze and deny that Tsuzuki was slipping, back in Kyoto. That it caused him to stumble and let a murderer overtake and do unspeakable things to him.

He'd overcome his fear. He'd thrown himself headlong into solving the other problem. He put himself before the great Kurikara and refused to back down, no matter how cold his chest felt and how much he was shaking and stumbling over his words.

It was his fault Riko was dead. His first, his only, his faithful shikigami, no matter how weak he was, followed him to Kurikara's lair without a single protest. Riko listened to him and followed him even to where Tsuzuki would not. And then Kojirou almost became a second collateral to his stupidity.

A gasp, and then another, stronger. He could breathe.

But... but saving Kojirou wouldn't bring Riko back. Nothing could. It was another black mark he'd add to his past, another time when his own actions couldn't stop a situation from happening, or only made it worse. If he went after Kurikara again, who would die then? Tsuzuki? Hisoka didn't want to take the risk. But at the same time, if he just ran away, it would be like all the times in the past... only he wouldn't be the only one that had lost something.

He'd have to decide. He'd have to decide soon, too, before he left with Tsuzuki and went back to Meifu for good. Each moment brought him closer to it, and Hisoka hated that moment of indecision. He hated the next, as well. And the next, and the next.

Tatsumi-san,

I believe something unusual has happened to the photocopier in the main office and should probably be replaced as soon as possible. It's suddenly gained a life of its own and has taken to stepping on employees' feet while they are attempting to operate it, and my partner complained that it attempted to eat his tie last Tuesday, though I'm having trouble verifying the truth of this statement. I'm not jumping to any conclusions, but it seems Watari-san is the only person it allows near it. He has also apparently named it Charles-kun.

Watari-san's cut in funding would probably be enough to order a replacement, if you'd like to consider it.

Thanks.

Kurosaki
