Would you place progress as a lower priority than enforcing the ideal of equality when such equality does not exist? I wouldn't. All men are created equal. However, both through their own doings and through circumstances beyond their control, not all men end up equal. Some people are, by no fault of their own, not as intelligent as others. Some people, whether by their own negligence or by consequence of a failing public education system, don't know as much as other people. Some people hold the writings in a 2000 year old collection of useful (but sometimes outdated) moral parables over the values of science and humanity. As much as it pains me to say this as a liberal (or something like that), some people are less qualified than others to make informed and objective decisions about the future of the country, and to refuse to acknowledge this for the sake of an abstract ideal is dangerous and irresponsible.
