And... the last "late" post of a translation. For some reason Chapter 4 is giving me a terrible time... >_<

~Behind the scenes compilation Part 2~
Ninomiya-kun and Mune-kun… A tearful departure
Meeting… and parting… Through this, one moves towards adulthood…
Since the aches and pains incident (when did this become an incident?[1]), Ninomiya-kun and Mune-kun’s connection deepened through the many locations and shoots.
“At the end, when we finally reveal who I am to Mune, I’m actually really worried about the reaction that he’s going to have…” was apparently how he felt about it. Having fun-filled days with Mune-kun, the summer break came to an end, and Ninomiya-kun was feeling a little depressed about the painful parting that was approaching.
“We’re getting down to the end, huh.” “Wonder if Mune-kun’s gonna be so surprised he’ll cry…” “What if we did a Frankenstein type shoot this time?” Ninomiya-kun and the other members of Arashi joked.
But, because it usually affected Ninomiya-kun the most, the others knew, “as the end draws nearer, Nino’s going to be really down.” At least being able to joke between friends, Ninomiya-kun seemed to be able to assuage his feelings…
“I’m fine, really. But that little Mune! Can he really make it all the way to Akasaka? I mean, I suppose I could ride the train with him, if that’d be okay.”
Even more than how the staff had planned, he had completely embraced the protective feelings of the Invisible Man.
“No, you can’t do that. Getting from his house in Tochigi to Akasaka by himself is the point of the last segement.”
“Yeah… I suppose…”
But really, because it was the end… because it was the very end, Ninomiya-kun wanted to stay with him just a little bit longer.
Something strange?! The touching finale… supposedly?
“Hey Mune-kun, you know we can see the Invisible Man, too.”
Three hundred fans had gathered in the studio for Arashi’s Special Live. Mune-kun, who had been invited to the site, as well, heard Matsumoto-kun’s words and gave him a blank stare.
“Nino!” the other members called to Ninomiya-kun, and so the Invisible Man took off his bandages and revealed who he really was…
At the time, everyone watching TV was probably expecting something a little different from the scene that actually ended up airing. But, there wasn’t enough just then for a suitable touching ending for Ninomiya-kun and Mune-kun. The lucky 300 fans who’d been invited must have felt so, too.
“Huh?! It… kind of ended a little early.”
Ninomiya-kun’s identity had been revealed, and what sort of reaction did the very surprised Mune-kun have? Though he’d been watching very nervously, for some reason, everything just came to a stop.
And of course, there is a reason for it.
First of all, when Ninomiya-kun went from being the Invisible Man back into the real Ninomiya Kazunari of Arashi… “What voice should he use to say what… Being the finale, going with the Invisible Man’s voice might be good[2],” he pondered, confused. “But then, wouldn’t that just be deceiving Mune? But because it’s about the same as finding out that Santa Claus is really just dad, or having a prank pulled on you, I think that because of how much Mune has even said that he likes me, more than even being surprised or happy, he’ll start panicking without knowing why.”
And, just as Ninomiya-kun predicted, the 4-year-old Mune-kun didn’t given the typical “Television-esque reaction.”
“During the Test Rangers[3] and the shoots this time, Mune was really entertaining, because he’s got a natural charm, right? That’s why I was thinking that there would be something more for the ending; but really, being able to part with him as the Invisible Man would leave a lasting impression on Mune, no?”
Kind Ninomiya-kun, thinking more about Mune-kun’s own feelings even more than amusement and unpredictability for the show. For Mune-kun, who Ninomiya-kun thought this much for, wouldn’t he be a very happy individual? Of course, looking at it like this, it feels like the reason that strange feeling of incongruity should become clear.
The “Real Last Scene” that never aired.
“Okay, Mune.”
“…”
“What’s wrong?”
“… Ninomiya-kun.”
“Yep, I’m Ninomiya-kun.”
The end of the end; the scene where Mune-kun’s mother came to pick him up and he went to her.
Before filming for that scene started, Ninomiya-kun asked the director, “Could we keep the cameras off for a minute? Since Mune and I have a certain kind of interaction, I’d like to see if we can show a bit of for the show.”
What Ninomiya-kun was meaning to tell Mune-kun was that “we didn’t do this just to trick you. We really wanted you to be able to become someone who can do anything by himself.”
“Toumei-tan[4] isn’t coming?”
“Nope.”
“And Ninomiya-kun?”
“I’m right here.”
“And Toumei-tan?”
It figured that Mune-kun still couldn't quite distinguish the two known entities of Ninomiya-kun and the Invisible Man from each other.
“What do I do…? How should I explain this…?” thought Ninomiya-kun, who hadn’t quite realized just how deeply Mune-kun cared about the Invisible Man. But, he’d decided that he needed to make a clear break for the end.
“Listen, Mune…”
He took Mune-kun’s hand and pulled it towards himself.
“This is Ninomiya-kun.”
“Yeah.”
Then, he moved Mune-kun’s hand to the boy’s heart, and with a big smile, said, “The Invisible Man.”
“Toumei-tan?”
“Yep, he’s in there.”
“Here?”
“Yeah, he’ll be in your heart… forever, ‘kay?”
“Forever?”
“So when even if you blow your whistle[5], your Invisible Man doesn’t show up, then that means that you’ve become an adult.”
“…”
“Got it?”
“… Yeah!”
And thus, the curtain closed on the “if ~Mune-kun’s Fantasy Story~.”
It may have been too bad not to have broadcast such a touching scene, but as Ninomiya-kun was talking like that to Mune-kun, no one dared turn the cameras back on. And so the staff and Arashi both felt that perhaps they had learned something from Ninomiya-kun about what true human kindness was…
Notes:
[1] See
Chapter 2.[2] Nino used a falsetto sort of voice when he was being the Invisible Man. A little like the voice he used as a maid in Yamada Taro.
[3] Again, literally, "Examination Soldiers" but I like the Power Rangers reference, since it translates better into English culture.
[4] The nickname for the Invisible Man (toumei ningen).
[5] Mune used a whistle to "summon" the Invisible Man for this segment series.
As usual: credit to the wonderful
tokyolovers and her
lovely scans. I swear I'll get Chapter 4 done someday. Then I can move on to the much more interesting-looking Chapter 5. (Not that 4 isn't interesting... it's just... Ugh.)
