Web Servery Fun

So I'm working on one of my New Year's resolutions. That would be the 200lbs of computer server from 8 years ago that is rusting in my attic. I want at least one up and running, but that requires planning, know-how and money. So here we go... feel free to chime in with ideas, as I'm curently brainstorming.

I have 4 quad 800 machines. One of them has 6 gigs of ram. I have like 8 HD's with between 30-8gigs.

Current plan:

Rape the others as best as I can. Sell two on ebay (currently they sell for a couple hundred $, if the last couple buys are fo reals)

Set up one with all the ram and hard drives and install something that will take advantage of the ram and multiprocs. Maybe some version of Linux. I'm not sure yet.

Once online, buy a domain name and use the dynamic ip fucking website RJ has provided. Port fowarding require research. Not sure what to go for as far as a name yet.

The server is to carry three things: Website , Forums, FTP server

Website will just be something pretty and explain how accounts are set up and such. Probly have a calendar of fun events and perhaps webcomics if I can get hannah into gear.

Forums are, well forums. Chatting about junk, events in the area, serevr updates, me begging for attention, etc.

FTP server will be pretty much open for people to throw anything they think is useful up there. Games, Music, books, movies, TV shows, P|20|\| and pics. A land of virtual wonder. Yay. Also it's nice to not deal with photobucket anymore.

In order to get Hard drives and have the bandwidth/electricity/etc I'll need some money, though. Selling the other servers can hopefully get me a little. I was thinking adverts on the main page that my users will thoughtfully click, but that will not be getting much unless we had a fuckload of users, which isnt the point of this. The other was that people kick $5-10 to the cause occasionally. Once a year or whenever they feel like it? I dunno. It's far too not a business for me feel alright about that. What do you guys think? With 8 drives, we can possibly get 4 terabytes with no backup internally, until I set up the second box for more of the same. (though I'd like some redundancy)

Think with me! Ideas, questions, comments?
