FST: running in (social) circles

Aug 15, 2011 21:07

This is the second fanmix I made for lemniciate's mixtape exchange. Once again, I took an XMFC prompt.

This was my prompt:

High School AU. Alex is the jock, Hank is the geek, they're both hot, etc.

So I ran with it. What else could I do?

Running in (social) circles

1. Totally Fucked--Spring Awakening
Yeah, you’re fucked all right - and all for spite
You can kiss your sorry ass goodbye
Totally fucked - will they mess you up?
Well you know they’re gonna try

2. Rudie Can’t Fail--The Clash
Hear them sayin'
How you get a rude and a reckless?
Don't you be so crude and a feckless
You been drinking brew for breakfast
Rudie can't fail

3. Here It Goes Again--OK Go
I guess there’s gotta be
A break in the monotony
But Jesus, when it rains
How it pours

4. Check Yes Juliet--We the Kings
Run baby run, don’t ever look back
They’ll tear us apart if you give them the chance
Don’t sell your heart-don’t say we’re not meant to be
Run baby run-forever we’ll be you and me

5. Friday Night--The Click Five
Friday night
Baby are you sleeping
Friday night
My heart is still beating
It’s all right
Curfew's gonna break my heart,
So come and meet me in the dark

6. On Any Given Day--Carbon Leaf
I window shop for you in my mind
A flannel shirt at the five and dime
A leather coat cut big city style
Boots from plastic crocodile
A pinecone dipped in glitter glue
A penny 1942
A necklace with a cheap green stone
Barefeet, cold sand. Chill to the bone

7. Car on a Hill--Joni Mitchell
He makes friends easy, he’s not like me
I watch for judgment, anxiously
Now where in the city can that boy be?

8. Fall--Something Corporate
I was so close that was the most that I had ever been through
Now old cassettes and cigarettes will be the ones to save you
How can you ask for me to stay when all you ever do is go?
Just go

9. Party In a Forest (Where’s Laura?)--The Wombats
Am I in a scene from 'Midsummer Nights Dream'?
I thought raves like these died in the 90s?
The forest is breathing along with us tonight

10. Good Year--Refreshments
You used to write me those funny little letters
In a language ours and ours alone
I gave my 'Catcher in the Rye' for your 'Cat's Cradle'
And I gave my 'White' for your 'Abby Road'

11. If I Die--Something Corporate
And I said do you lick these salty wounds
That you, yourself condone
I sit, wait, and I'm all alone
But I can't go home
'Cause you're my home

12. They’re In Love, Where Am I?--The Weepies
I guess I have to hope
That today the sun will shine
And maybe tomorrow you'll be mine

13. Weatherman--Kris Delmhorst
You say I live like I'm on ice skates going down a frozen hill
I say baby it has always been like that maybe it always will
And when I said that to you I did not mean to cause you pain
But you can go ahead and blame me like you blame the weatherman for the rain

14. λ♥[love]--Christine Collins
Like free morphemes you and I could lead our separate lives
But if we were to agglutinate
Together we would do so great
And I’d hate to miss the words we could derive

15. Case Of You--Joni Mitchell
I remember that time that you told me, you said
"Love is touching souls"
Surely you touched mine
‘Cause part of you pours out of me
In these lines from time to time

16. Good To Go--Josh Woodward
I'm snared and I'm smitten
Like a scared little kitten
But I'm not afraid to tell you anymore
I gave up denying
And I stopped always trying
To avoid the things that freaked me out before

This mix contains three of my most favorite songs in all the world: Weatherman (because it is so bittersweet and resigned that it kinda hurts), λ♥[love] (because I am a huge linguistics nerd, and all of the jargon-y lines are so cute), and Case Of You (because it is so true in the way only Joni Mitchell is)

This is also different from my other one in that it has an underlying plot to it:

At the start of Sophomore year, Hank is the class nerd and at rock bottom of the social food chain. He only really talks to the teachers and Raven, (who he only got to know because she was the younger sister of one of the teachers) but she's in none of his classes this year so he's basically S.O.L. (track one). In comes the new transfer student, Alex Summers. No one knows where he's from, but his attitude and frequent visits to the Guidance office starts all kinds of rumors-he went to juvie (true), he was part of a gang but testified against them in court and is in witness protection (false), he has a huge back tattoo (false), he was the best player on the lacrosse team at prison (only half true-there was no lacrosse team there, Alex played at his old school. Alex actually finds it hilarious and dumb that people think there was an actual team on the inside). Basically, it all amounts to "Alex Summers is a badass and he will mess you up." (track two)
Suffice it to say, Hank isn't too keen to get to know this guy. But then his Chem lab comes along, and suddenly Hank is partnered with him. Hank is startled first by how ridiculously good looking Alex is, then by the fact that Alex is actually smart (track 3).
Cue a few more weeks of them working together. At the end of the day, Alex stops Hank and asks him out. He's basically all "I know I've got this huge rep, and you're probably not doing yourself any huge favors in terms of status if you go out with me, but I really like you. Let's do this."
CUE MONTAGE. (tracks 4, 5)
The school year ends, and while Alex and Hank still see each other occasionally, Hank goes off on a trip for most of the summer. He completely forgets to tell Alex about it, and feels awful about the fact that he jut had to vanish. Still, he calls, and apologizes (Alex is still pretty hurt, even if he brushes it off). The whole duration of the trip, they're the classic high school pair. Pining after each other, they constantly see things that remind them of each other (track 6).
When Hank gets back, he and Alex decide to go out on a nice date. You know, a "we haven't seen each other in what feels like years" kind of date. But Alex is really busy with lacrosse. He's gathered a whole circle of friends while Hank has been away, so now Hank feels a bit like he's being left in the dust (track 7).
Hank voices these worries to Alex. Cue hot reassurance makeouts, that just leave Hank wondering if Alex is really 'there'. The honeymoon is definitely over now, and lots of doubts are surfacing. On Alex's part because Hank is so into learning things that maybe Alex was just an experiment and eventually it's gonna end, and on Hank's part because Alex seems so flighty and he's worried that Alex is just gonna want to spend time with his new friends and not his massively dorky boyfriend. So while things get steamy on the outside, they're both wondering how much longer the other is going to keep up the "charade" (track 8).
It's at a party hosted by one of the lacrosse team that everything falls apart. Hank's just on the sidelines while Alex is the social butterfly, laughing and chatting and basically not spending time with Hank at all. This is where Hank decides it would be best if they stopped seeing each other. (track 9) The next day, he breaks it off with Alex, saying that tings have changed and he doesn't think they're good for each other any more, and that they've grown apart. (track 10)
It turns into an argument, with both of them going off hurt and wanting to take back some of the things they said, but unwilling to "give in". (track 11)
Life goes on, and Hank spends time with Raven, but she's got a boyfriend now. And while she is always happy to spend time with Hank (and actually cancelled her date the night he broke up with Alex), her current focus is on Azazel. When she talks about him to Hank, it's clear she knows more about him than Hank ever did about Alex. Realizing that was the whole start of the problem, he goes to Alex to reconcile. (track 12)
It doesn't go as planned, and Alex basically rants about his childhood, growing up in foster care, going to juvie, and all the problems he got from that. (track 13) It's sort of a "oh, NOW you want to know about me? Screw you!" thing.
Alex is hurt and angry, and Hank realizes how huge of a mess it all is. Hank, who has gone through school hiding from the social-circle monster, decides to eff it and make it up to Alex with a ridiculous romantic gesture. It happens to be an incredibly geeky one, but it works. (track 14) Alex responds in his own surprising way-subtly. (track 15)
They FINALLY sit down, talk, and get their shit together.
CUE HAPPY ENDING. (track 16)

Alright, as ridiculous as that just was, it's not a detailed plotline. Thoughts?
