I guess I should go into a little more detail about what happened to luke for those of you who don't live in northern Oregon. Luke Glenn was a graduate from my high school, Tigard High School. He was on the football team (one of the best kickers we ever had), and loved to play soccer and hang out with his friends. I never really knew him, but I ( Read more... )

Er I'm biased as I'm a former MP but the actions of the police are in fact by the book. It's tragic, but that is what they are trained for. The suspect was given multiple chances to surrender his weapon. It didn't even have to be a knife. It could have been a beer bottle, or a baseball bat etc. But he refused. That is usually taken as a sign that the suspect is then a danger to others and has no regard for himself.

Everyone likes to blame the cops. There are both good and bad ones out there, but it doesn't seem to me in this case that those cops are "bad". If they had allowed him to enter the house and he killed someone then the papers would be all over them for that. You can't win really.

thats exactly what i think...its horrible but...there wasnt much of an alternative except maybe a non-fatal shot. but he might have kept moving after that and then they'd have lost their only shot and the family would be hurt or killed.

its horrible but i think there wasnt much choice for the cops...it was a quick decision they needed to make.

Despite what tv & movies tell you, there is no such thing as a "non-fatal shot". Cops are trained to "shoot to kill". If they draw their weapon it's because someone's life is in danger.

And to be honest, someone who's not listening to cops in this type of situation makes me think he's on drugs, in which case there is little chance of rationalizing anything with him.

yeah i agree
he was defenetly drunk and maybe on drugs, he took 3 bean bags and kept moving which is a feat in itself. and it took 5 shots to the back to bring him down in the end. why in the back? cause he was moving back into the house to possible hurt the people he'd already threatened through the door he'd broken in. and why 5? cause one wouldnt have brought him down, cops are trained to keep shooting til the threat is gone, one shot would have only meant he went into the house with a bullet wound and even angrier...he would have killed someone in all likely hood.

this event is tragic, i wish none of it happened. but the fact is that he made some bad choices and it cost him his life.
