Question about philosophy of probability books.

I'm doing an independent study to get a (hopefully) pretty solid background in probability. The proff is starting me on skyrm's "choice and chance." The book looks good, if pretty basic and not really containing much that is new (to me). After I do that, I'm planning on doing Carnap's "the logical foundations of probability," review popper's "the ( Read more... )

My department recently had an advanced philosophy of probability course, given by one Dr. Pitowsky. I didn't attend it, but if you like, I could ask what the readings were.

Dr. Pitowsky looks like he mostly specializes in quantum probability, which isn't something I'm super interested in, at least for the moment. If the course wasn't specifically quantum, but was an advanced philosophy of probability one, then I would love to know what the syllabus covered. If you could ask for that, I would be super greatful, thanks!

I talked to a fellow grad student who told me the main text they were working from was Jan von Plato's Creating Modern Probability. Apparently it is thorough and rather technical.

I was also told by bemused attendees that there was no course outline, no other readings, and that the whole thing was done off the cuff in that manner only eccentric, brilliant people can pull off.

Although it's by a physicist rather than a philosopher it might be worth checking out Edwin Jaynes' 'Probability Theory: The Logic of Science." Most of it's available online.

hmm, looks like I need to reinstall ghostwriter (or whatever opens .ps files). in any case, it might actually be quite good to get a straight scientists' view on foundational probability and statistics, so thanks for the resource/link.
