Since it has been so helpfully suggested to me by our dear number XIII, I will talk about something other than where I came from. No descriptions of Castle Oblivion for you, dear citizenry.

Instead, I'll speak of medieval torture.

Torture was very popular in medieval times due to the effectiveness it had in keeping the rest of the population in line for fear of it.

One of the more popular forms (often shown at parties) was the Judas Cradle. The victims were placed on top of the wedge, and I'm sure you can guess where, from the picture, and then were slowly lowered more and more down onto it, impaling them on this point. Depending on how fast or slow the torturer wanted the victim to die, or how much information they wanted out of them, they would tie them up with ropes and suspend them to prolong the torture, or press them down onto it with weights to shorten it.

Then there was the Coffin. Though not visually as brutal as other forms of torture, it's victims were usually placed within either too small or too large coffins, squishing them in there or causing their feet to be suspended and their entire weight pressed on their arms and groin. The victims would then hang outside to be eaten by birds and other animals, or to have rocks or rotten vegetables thrown at them by the rest of the population.

One of my favorites, and by far the most popular (and the most painful), is the Rack. The victim was tied down onto the rack and, as the torturer slowly cranked the wheel, their limbs were torn apart--usually first the arms, then the legs. Torn clean off the victim's body. Quite the sight it was--and very good for information gathering.

Another popular torture device was the Chair. Covered with many tiny spikes (ranging in count from 500 to 1500), the victim was restrained while these sharp pieces of metal pierced them slowly. Because the victim could not move, they slowly bled to death internally. Occasionally hot coals were placed underneath to heat the spikes and cause burns as well as puncture wounds. Multi-purpose!

The Head Crusher was used mostly for interrogation, as the victim's head was slowly crushed vertically, causing prologue pain and quite a bit of damage, both to the brain of the victim and physically to their face. Some of these clever contraptions even had places to catch the victims eyes as they fell out of their sockets when their heads were crushed.

Then there is the famous Iron Maiden. Standing about seven feet high, many spikes were placed on the door of this upright casket in places where they wouldn't pierce vital organs. Then the door was closed on the victim, while they were not allowed to see or hear. This, of course, not only prolonged torture, as the spikes caused pain but at the same time acted like a stopper to keep them from bleeding to death, but also the pain was increase psychologically due to the lack of input from the senses.

Demyx, you'll like these ones. Torture with water.

In that category, there's simply using only drops of water in the same spot, for several days or even months at a time. This lead to the skin in that one spot slowly eroding away and creating a hole in whatever part of the body was desired by the torturer.

Another way, the victim was forced to drink water until they confessed or death came upon them from all the water they consumed. Can you imagine how bloated those people were before they died? What a funny sight!

There was also freezing people to death using water. Torturers would strip the victim and make them stand outside in the cold, and then slowly pour cups of water over their heads until they became frozen in place as an icicle! Hmm...we could do something like that right now, what with the weather we're having.

However, if you prefer something hotter, why not try the Brazen Bull? When victims are placed inside this metal creature, and then placed on top of a fire, they are slowly roasted alive. Rumor has it that the Greeks made it quite complex as time went on, even being able to create a device that changed the victims screams to sound like that of a raging bull. Quite clever, don't you think?

Ever so interesting, don't you think, Namine?
