clicky [Background] Needless to say, Kisuke Urahara got a lot accomplished during his many years of life and death combined. There are still plenty of unknown specifics about his past up until a certain point, although what can be known for sure is that he grew up with Yoruichi Shihouin. Apparently he stayed in her mansion for some time, and had a knack for mischief all the while, even going so far as to build an "playground" of sorts for the both of them underneath the Sokyouku. Also living within the Shihouin mansion was Kisuke's subordinate-to-be, Tessai Tsukabishi.
Until he became captain of the Twelfth Division, Kisuke was the third seat of the Second Division, under Yoruichi. And since the Second Division and the Special Forces were closely tied together due to Yoruichi's influence to the point that every seated person in the Second Division was also part of the Special Forces, Kisuke was the Corps Commander of the Detention Unit of the Special Forces. After more than a few years of that, and the previous Twelfth Division Captain was promoted from her spot, Yoruichi recommended Kisuke to fill in the empty seat. Once taking the test and passing it, he was given the seat without much difficulty. However being late to the actual ceremony to inform the rest of the Captains didn't help his popularity, and caused people to question him a bit. His aloofness and seemingly too-relaxed-for-his-own-good attitude was a bit of a cause for concern.
That said personality didn't particularly help him with his second-in-command either. The ever loud-mouthed Hiyori Sarugaki was the lieutenant that he inherited from the previous captain. While not initially hitting it off, Kisuke seemed to dismiss that as he asked her to accompany him to the "Maggot's Nest". He tells a story along the way, particularly about how those of the Detention Unit have another responsibility known as "Special Detention". He gives a long-winded explanation that generally just means that there are another type of individuals who are locked up in a portion of the Soul Society set aside, which affectionately received the name of the "Maggot's Nest". Inside, they find a group of individuals who seem to be doing a lot of nothing. When asked about what the people had done to receive such treatment as being set apart from everyone else, Kisuke gave the simple answer of "nothing."
The people had done no wrong, but if they were suspected of being capable of doing wrong in the future, they would be set aside and placed into the Maggot's Nest. During their stay, Kisuke and Hiyori were attacked by one large individual. This enraged man was easily halted by just Kisuke's pure strength alone. After that, they approached the sole individual that was set apart from everyone else, Mayuri Kurotsuchi. It was then that Kisuke's plans to set up another corporation within the Gotei 13 were revealed. He wanted to create a more scientific division, which resulted in him founding and becoming the first president of the Shinigami Research and Development Institute.
It seemed that all sailed smoothly for years to come, and relations between Kisuke and Hiyori even improved, until a crisis occurred no more than a decade after Kisuke acquired the position of captain. There were reports of people disappearing in the forests of Rukongai, and there was some more investigation put into it. Everything blew up on the day that they requested more help, and Kisuke decided to send Hiyori since he trusted her the most. When they lost contact with all the people they had sent however, this included Hiyori, which sent Kisuke into a panic. He almost left on his own to tag after Hiyori, but an alarm sounded for all captains to congregate. Again, he was late to yet another meeting and quite disheveled at that. Once asking the Commander-General Yamamoto for permission to leave and being denied, he made an attempt to leave on his own anyway.
He brought along a cloak that would manage to hide his presence, but was confronted by Tessai just as he was leaving. It was then that Tessai said that he'd go along with Kisuke, and off they went into the night. They confronted Aizen (who was behind the whole plot) just in time to save all the people who had been turned partially into hollows. It seemed that Kisuke knew what was occurring to make the shinigami turn partially into hollows, and called it hollowfication. Aizen departed moments later, and then Tessai transported them all to the Twelfth Division building, where Kisuke made attempts to return the fallen shinigami back to their normal state. Once it had been made clear that he had failed, he and Tessai were then falsely charged and brought before the Central 46.
The trial did not seem to be going in their favor, as Kisuke was accused of turning the shinigami into hollows himself, and Tessai of using forbidden kido. It was then that Yoruichi bust in to their rescue and whisked both men out of there. She took him back to a safer location, where she had already taken all the eight transformed shinigami. After being chewed out by his good friend, he then got to work on ten gigais so that he, Tessai, and all the half-shinigami-half-hollows could make it to Earth. Sometime later, Yoruichi followed.
It seemed that since arriving on Earth, Urahara set up a shop in Karakura town called the Urahara Shoten, where Tessai works as his subordinate along with two children named Ururu and Jinta. This shop seems to deal with the abnormal items that typically help shinigami and such. Although he jokes in an interview that it's a rather shady shop where women of all ages spend their time, buying things that he "can't say in mixed company".
Kisuke makes his first actual appearance when he appears to Rukia, offering her a gigai. He helps her maintain it as well, answering her complaints when she notes that its response time is getting worse. During this time, he also sells her some "Soul Candy", which ends up creating a huge mess. And in the end, when he tries to clean it up by trying to destroy the chew little piece of candy that created said mess, they don't let him. Ungrateful kids. While he doesn't want to let them go, he has to admit that since Rukia already purchased the item, it's out of his hands.
His next appearance once again involves bailing Rukia and Ichigo out of another mess, as he helps Ichigo go into soul reaper-mode after he's being restrained. However the instant it looks like he's going to get questioned by the cops, he erases their memories (via special Soul Society invention) and makes a run for it. After this, he plays a bit more of a supporting role, offering information to Rukia about who the Quincy are, and then assisting Ichigo and his friends during the hollow invasion of Karakura town. It is somewhere around this time that Yoruichi, as a cat, returns to him and they discuss a bit over milk.
Now his next appearance is slightly more meaningful, as he assists Ichigo once Rukia is taken away by Byakuya and Renji to go back to the Soul Society. He drags the poor unconscious boy back to the Urahara Shoten before giving him some key advice: Keep going to school and use this weird balm to heal your wounds. Ichigo follows this before returning to the shop once school lets out for summer, and then his rigorous training to become a shinigami again begins. After making a big show of the new underground training area installed just for Ichigo, Kisuke gets down to more serious business and immediately begins.
Ichigo has to go under numerous trials, the first two including dodging a little girl's punches and then crawling out of a huge hole with no hands within three days. It's more rigorous than that, really. But either way, he regains his shinigami powers and Kisuke decides to finally go all out. His next challenge would probably be a little bit more difficult. He has to knock off Kisuke's hat with his sword. Ichigo got first on the close strike, but that was only because he caught the weird shop owner off-guard. However once Kisuke draws out his own weapon, which at first appears as a cane, things become more difficult.
In the end, once finally calling out his sword's name, Ichigo manages to knock off Kisuke's hat, and would've done a lot more damage if Kisuke hadn't used his own sword's special ability to go on defense and shield off most of the blast. Once the training is all over, Kisuke allows Ichigo to roam free for a while. All is peaceful until he summons Ichigo and the rest of his friends to the shop, sending them off to Soul Society to go rescue Rukia. He leaves it all in their hands, as well as Yoruichi's paws.
We have no updates on what he's doing all the while, although a few more bits of his past are revealed by other characters. Yoruichi shares that Kisuke was previously a captain with the rest of the cast, as well as a few other tidbits, such as the fact that they grew up together. However he seems prepared for when the group returns, managing to catch them all and then dropping each of them off at their individual homes.
Now when the Arrancar start getting involved, and Ulquiorra and Yammy appeared in Karakura town, he and Yoruichi stepped in to defend some innocents from having their lives taken. Yoruichi does most of the grunt work, although Kisuke had prepared some medicine in advance and also uses Benihime to shield some of the attacks. As times passes, he offers residence to Renji in exchange for him doing the chores as well as educating Chad in the workings of battle. Kisuke appears in battle once more, again against Yammy, where more of his shinigami skills become apparent. He shows off his invention of a portable gigai, which also works as a perfect double.
After all that's done and take care of, he again provides transportation for Ichigo and the others to Hueco Mundo. He then has a few things to take care of after, but we don't really get to see him doing any of it. :|
[Personality] Kisuke Urahara is one of the most puzzling people in the series. To most, he may seem like the typical, carefree small shop owner, who occasionally seems like he has a few screws loose. He's a generally polite man, which comes along with more than the occasional sarcastic remark. For potential customers, he's quite patient and could be considered as inviting. Although those who find themselves closer to him may receive the sarcastic comments all the more, as well as constant taunting.
To his constant customers and allies, Urahara becomes a bit less formal and far more annoying. He's been known to lie in order to gain amusement from the reactions of the people (like telling Ichigo about the "headband of justice", lmao). He asks favors and is far more blunt as well. But he still retains his playful demeanor all the while, and tries to craft all his deals to work in his favor.
Now that isn't to say that Kisuke is solely all play and no work. In fact, when he gets serious he tens to lose most of his sense of humor. When wrapped up in the topic of war or some otherwise dark conflicts, his outlook seems to completely change. He will be willing to take drastic measures and subsequently follow through on his threats. Some of his methods are also rather questionable, always placing leaving in life or death situations to increase their strength. His intentions are typically for the good of the team, but sometimes you have to wonder if he should really go as far as he does.
That being said, he does have a very good grasp on times of turmoil. He knew it would be better to take Orihime out of the battlefield before Aizen took her from them, for instance. During the series, he plays quite a bit of a supporting role, rather well-informed in comparison to everyone else. He assists them all in their little conflict by both training them and supplying them with means of transportation as well as items that they may need. A rather shady figure in general, its unsure what his true motivations are. But it seems that neither he nor the others pay that any mind.
[Specialties/Abilities] Having taken many positions during his time in the Gotei 13, Kisuke is very skilled, in many aspects. For one, his combat skills are quite well developed. As leader of the detention unit, he knows how to stop many strong people bare-handed. And with his zanpakuto, his sword, he is that much more skilled. It's been known that he can use Bankai, which is the strongest form of release for a zanpakuto. Although it seems that this bankai is no good for helping people get stronger, which gives the impression that it's for killing alone. He also seems to know how to implement kido rather well, although he doesn't seem to use it a lot in comparison. His shunpo, or flash step depending on what translation you want to use, is also very advanced. It seems that he's somewhere close to Yoruichi's level in that aspect.
His zanpakuto is a major part of his physical capabilities. So far, it's been explained that its/her name is "Benihime", the red princess. The release is "cry" or "scream", depending on which translation you want to go off of. Benihime can create individual waves of power, slicing things in its path. Another one of her capabilities is to create a blood red shield, protecting Kisuke from most attacks. Although this shield can be broken through, example of this is when Ichigo managed it. As with typical zanpakuto, Benihime can cut through any substance even the intangible stuff that ghosts are made out of. It also looks like a cane most of the time.
He's also very gifted mentally. Since he was the founder of the Science Division of the Gotei 13, it's clear that he knew what he was doing in terms of intellect. It seems that he knows how things in the world works back and forth, often explaining how the traveling between worlds occurs, as well as how to help with one's training. Shinigami and hollows seem to be very common subjects for him, and it wouldn't be a surprise if he studied them thoroughly. Kisuke's also been proven to be a skilled inventor, seeing as he made many items that are of use to the canon. Some items are soul candy, the hogyoku, and quite a bit more. His latest invention is a portable, inflatable gigai.
In a nutshell, he's physically capable of many feats, although he rarely has the motivation to take part in battle himself when he can send others to do it for him. And mentally, he's just as formidable.
[Affection] Considering that he openly considers himself to be perverted, it's highly dobuted that Kisuke has any issues with affection. He'll more than likely attempt a hug here and there from someone he finds attractive, although anything actually intimate would probably take a while to develop. He's very gentlemanly and treats the ladies well, nonetheless.
[Fighting] Starting a fight is totally okay with me, although about who wins... it's another matter entirely. Kisuke's not without his faults, but to date in the manga, I don't think we've ever seen him fight with all his strength. He'd rather not fight at all, and is rather good at just evading an enemy. However, if he's provoked or put into a situation where a fight is inevitable, it's not likely that he'd show mercy. Considering all that he's capable of, there's a good chance he'd win the fight against most.
[Other Facts] I'll put something here later.
